(授業の概要・目的) | What makes you who are you? The genes you’ve inherited or the experiences you have? Can we really influence the unconscious mind? Do dreams have deeper meanings? Can psychology improve your ability to study and remember information? Psychology is the scientific study of the brain, the mind, and behavior. This course surveys classic and modern findings, methods, and real world applications in psychological science, to answer these philosophical questions about what it means to be human. Psychology I focuses on biological and cognitive approaches to the study of psychology. |

In doing so, we will use real world case studies and famous journal papers to gain interdisciplinary knowledge from different fields such as environmental sociology, environmental ethics, sociology, philosophy and sustainability transitions and learn how apply these theories to actual environmental and social situations. The class has a strong theoretical focus and will suit students who already possess: 1) an advanced level in English, 2) basic understanding of environmental problems, 3) an interest in academic research. |

Exploring the core questions of the nature and functions of rituals, we will examine some of the different types of rituals that humans create and participate in, as well as their meaning and significance, in both secular and sacred contexts. This course will present a number of ritual genres, notably rites of passage, as well as the theories and methods used to study them. |

First students will gain an understanding of the notion of rituals, their meanings and social functions, the scope of ritual studies, as well as an awareness of the wide array of rituals that humans participate in. Third, the course will help students become more comfortable formulating thoughts and opinions on a specific topic. |

Systematic tardiness and leaving the class early will also result in a decrease of the final grade. |

(授業の概要・目的) | 「観照」とは、主観を交えないで物事を観察し、その意味を明らかに知ることを意味している。 本授業では、日本社会の様々な側面—例えば家族、学校、職場など−における歴史的変容と現代的課題を取り上げ、多角的に考察する。当授業は多くの留学生と共に学ぶ。多様な文化的背景を持つ学生間の対話を通して、比較の視点や世界的文脈における日本の位置づけを意識しながら、現代の日本社会の状況についての理解を深める、すなわち「観照」していく。 まず、家族、学校、伝統的技術とテクノロジー、スポーツ、メディア・コミュニケーションといった場面・題材において、日本的特徴を捉えるキーワードを設定し、それを手掛かりとしながら、時代によって変化する事象、変化しない事象について、各種統計や資料を用いて検討する。また、社会学、文化人類学、文学、歴史学などの文献を用い、複雑な日本の現状を理解するのに有効且つ基礎的な学術的視点に触れる。 本講義は、毎回の講義とディスカッションで構成される。各参加者はディスカッションに参加するのみならず、ディスカッションをリードする経験をする。そして、相手を論破するのではなく、多様な背景から生まれる様々な意見を受止めながら日本社会への理解を深める経験をし、意見交換を行う技能を養う。 "Kansho" means to observe things objectively and to clearly understand their meanings. This course introduces current conditions and issues in Japanese society, examining the effects of social changes on everyday practices in the family, schools, and the workplace. It will be taught together with international students. Through dialogue among students with diverse cultural backgrounds, students will deepen their understanding of the situation of contemporary Japanese society, or "Kansho", while being aware of comparative perspectives and the position of Japan in the global context. Key concepts will be introduced within the main topics of households, education, technology, sports and leisure, and media and communication. We will investigate the background of these aspects of Japanese society by using texts taken from such fields as sociology, anthropology, literature, and history, as well as various media in order to understand the complexity of current issues in Japan. Each class includes a lecture and discussions led by students. Each student is required to facilitate discussion of at least one assigned reading over the course of the semester. Students will gain experience in deepening their understanding of Japanese society while accepting a variety of opinions from diverse backgrounds and will develop skills in exchanging opinions. |

(成績評価の方法・観点及び達成度) | 参加態度(30%)、グループディスカッションへの参加と司会(30%)*、中間試験(20%)**、期末レポート(20%) *グループディスカッションの司会(facilitator)について - 第 3 週から第 13 週にかけて各学生は学期に一度、小グループでのディスカッションの司会(facilitate)を担当する。 - 司会者は、リーディングの要約と3〜5問の質問(Discussion questions)を含むハンドアウト(A4×1ページ)を作成し、発表日の前日までに提出する。 - 司会者は、小グループに対して10分間のプレゼンテーションを行い、10〜15分でグループディスカッションをリードする。 - グループディスカッションの進行後、各週の各グループの司会者はクラス全体に向けて口頭で短いまとめを行う。 **中間試験について 中間試験の問題は第7週に開示され、第8週の授業前までにPandAに提出する。中間試験は学期前半に学んだ内容から出題され、1週間以内で取り組める内容となっている。 Participation in class activities (30%), a group discussion facilitation (30%)*, a midterm exam (20%)**, and a final report (20%). * About a group discussion facilitation: - Each student will be assigned to one reading and facilitate small group discussion during weeks 3-13. - The facilitator will prepare a handout (A4x 1page) including a summary of the reading and 3-5 discussion questions and submit it to the instructor by one day before your presentation date. - The facilitator will give 10 minutes presentation to the small group and lead a group discussion in 10-15 minutes. - The discussion group will be decided randomly each week. - After facilitating the group discussion, each facilitator of the week will give a short summary orally to the whole class. ** The midterm exam will be a take-home exam. *グループディスカッションの司会(facilitator)について - 第 3 週から第 13 週にかけて各学生は学期に一度、小グループでのディスカッションの司会(facilitate)を担当する。 - 司会者は、リーディングの要約と3〜5問の質問(Discussion questions)を含むハンドアウト(A4×1ページ)を作成し、発表日の前日までに提出する。 - 司会者は、小グループに対して10分間のプレゼンテーションを行い、10〜15分でグループディスカッションをリードする。 - グループディスカッションの進行後、各週の各グループの司会者はクラス全体に向けて口頭で短いまとめを行う。 **中間試験について 中間試験の問題は第7週に開示され、第8週の授業前までにPandAに提出する。中間試験は学期前半に学んだ内容から出題され、1週間以内で取り組める内容となっている。 Participation in class activities (30%), a group discussion facilitation (30%)*, a midterm exam (20%)**, and a final report (20%). * About a group discussion facilitation: - Each student will be assigned to one reading and facilitate small group discussion during weeks 3-13. - The facilitator will prepare a handout (A4x 1page) including a summary of the reading and 3-5 discussion questions and submit it to the instructor by one day before your presentation date. - The facilitator will give 10 minutes presentation to the small group and lead a group discussion in 10-15 minutes. - The discussion group will be decided randomly each week. - After facilitating the group discussion, each facilitator of the week will give a short summary orally to the whole class. ** The midterm exam will be a take-home exam. (授業の概要・目的) | 自分が生きているこの社会は、どのような「しくみ」で動いているのか? この社会は、これからどうなるのか? この社会で自分が「幸せに生きる」には、どうしたらいいのか? この社会を「より多くの人々が幸せに生きられる社会」にするには、どうしたらいいのか? 社会学は、こういった問題に取り組むために(19世紀西欧を発祥として)築き上げられてきた学問である。したがって社会学は、現代社会を生きる私たち一人一人にとって、「生きる糧」になりうる。 そこで本授業では、社会学的思考法を伝授する。社会学的思考法とは、「社会現象を成立させている『構造とコミュニケーションの相互影響関係』に着目する思考方法」である。本授業では、社会学の基礎研究や応用研究を紹介し、社会学的思考法のトレーニングの機会を設ける。そのことにより、受講生が自分の専門の研究や今後の日常生活において、必要に応じて社会学的思考法を用いて、専門研究をより豊かにしたり、今後の生活をより幸福なものにしたりできるようになることをめざす (なお、同教員の後期の「社会学II」よりも基礎研究に重点を置いた授業方針となるため、毎回の内容もモードが異なる。) |

この授業では、教育現象を社会的広がりの中に位置づけて捉える視点、すなわち教育社会学的なものの見方を学ぶ。古今東西の、学校や教師、子どもの生きる世界をビビッドに描いた映画・文学作品・漫画などを手がかりにして、そこに表現された教育問題を社会や歴史の中に位置づける視点を学び、それを理論化する道すじについても講述する。

The class sessions will also involve pair, small group, and/or plenary discussions, and exercises for students to complete individually or in cooperation with other students. Active participation in these discussions and exercises is necessary to meet coursework/grading requirements. 40% of the course grade is based on a portfolio of work that students complete relating to the topics dealt with in the course (i.e., exercises completed in class, notes on key points raised in discussions with other students, notes taken from and reflections on assigned and other readings undertaken, etc.). |
