鎌倉幕府裁許状を読む

　鎌倉幕府は、きわめて整然とした発給文書体系と、裁判制度を有していました。その裁判の際、勝訴者に交付されたのが、鎌倉幕府裁許状です。

　授業では、鎌倉幕府裁許状をテキストに、受講生が自力で漢文史料を読み、解釈するための基礎能力を養成します。

日本中世史の基本史料を自力で読み、すなおに解釈する能力を習得する。

日本史に関する基礎知識と一定の漢文読解力があることが望ましい。前期のＩＬＡＳセミナー：日本古代・中世政治文化論Ⅱ(基礎演習：日本古代・中世政治文化論Ⅱ)を履修した受講者の継続した受講を推奨します。

出席と参加の状況と発表内容により、平常点の100点満点で評価します。詳細は、初回授業等で説明します。

The class intends to give an overview of the history of Egypt in the Greek and Roman periods and its unique source material, Greek papyri. With the foundation of cities such as Alexandria - very long the biggest city in the entire Mediterranean - or the emergence of Christian asceticism and monasticism, this area and time saw historical developments of fundamental historical importance for entire Europe as well as the near and middle east. The class shall focus on the time of the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BCE, through the Greek and Roman times up to the 7th century CE, when the Arabs conquered the country. It shall give insights into the society, economy, religion, administration and culture of a region that saw a mixed population of Greeks and Egyptians, later also Romans, that lived next to each other, but also connected with each other. In throwing light on important selected events and sources, it shall also make the students familiar with papyri, the universally used writing material of antiquity that almost only survived in Egypt due to its dry climate and that offers a wealth of information on topics that in many cases are only superficially or not at all covered by other ancient sources. Egypt therefore offers a closer and more detailed view of ancient Greek and Roman history than almost any other place.

Participants will get knowledge about the history, religion, society, economy and administration of Egypt from the 4th century BCE to the 7th century CE; they will get knowledge about the discipline of papyrology, its aids and methods;they will deal with original material from the Kyoto University Museum and how to work with objects from Egypt; they will reflect on the multiethnic relations of Graeco-Roman Egypt and the dynamics of power between an occupying power such as the Ptolemies or the Romans and the local population; they will realize the importance of Egypt as a strategic and economic part of the Mediterranean and Africa; they will discuss the relevance of Egyptian history for world history and in how far the dynamics of power and the impact of empire that we have analysed in Egypt could be referred to East-Asia, as well.

Course schedule: The class will be held in 4 blocks, 1 block with 3 units of 90 minutes, 3 blocks with 4 units of 90 minutes; Block 1, General introduction: Egypt in the context of Greek and Roman History; The discipline of papyrology, its history, aids and methods; Hands on class in the Kyoto University Museum; Block 2, Ptolemaic Egypt: The conquest of Alexander the Great; The foundation of Alexandria and its urban development; The Ptolemaic kings and the Egyptian priests; The Economy of Ptolemaic Egypt; Block 3, Roman Egypt: The conquest of the Romans and their administrative changes in the new province; Greek cities in Egypt and their influence on the local society; Urban development in the Egyptian countryside; The grain supply to Rome from Egypt; Block 4 Byzantine Egypt: The emperor Diocletian in the province; The emergence of asceticism and monasticism; The church in the Egyptian countryside; The Arab conquest, continuities and changes
