熱力学は、蒸気機関の効率を研究することなどにより19世紀頃から大きく発展した。粒子数がアボガドロ数程度以上となる集合体全体の変化について、その起こりやすさや進む方向を、対象とする「系」と「外界」との間のエネルギーの出入りおよびエントロピーの増減によって説明する、現代の科学・技術の根幹をなす学術領域である。
　本講義は、温度・圧力などの外部の条件によって、物質の巨視的な状態や性質がどのように変わるか、また、存在状態の異なる複数の領域（相）間の平衡条件、組成の関数としての混合物・溶液の性質などを学ぶ。特に、これらの現象を統一的に記述することのできる、熱力学関数を理解することを目標とする。また、自然における自発的な変化の起源であるエントロピーについて学び、純物質や混合系の状態変化を、熱力学的パラメータを使って記述する道筋の理解を深める。

１．理想気体と実在気体の概念を理解し、実在気体に特有の性質についてその分子論的起源を説明できるようになる。
２．熱力学第一法則について、熱と仕事の関係を記述する諸法則を理解し、両者のエネルギーとしての差異を説明できるようになる。
３．熱力学第二法則について、混合や化学反応の自発的な方向を決める重要な変数としてのエントロピーの定義を理解し、特定の過程におけるその変化量を計算できるようになる。
４．熱力学変数や組成の関数として、相平衡がどのように影響を受けるかを理解し、ギブズエネルギーの増減によってその挙動を説明できるようになる。
５．化学反応や電子のやりとりに関わるギブズエネルギーの役割を理解し、化学平衡に及ぼす熱力学変数の影響を正しく記述できるようになる。

下記の課題について、フィードバックを含め全１５回で、１課題あたり標準２週の授業をする予定である。

前期（熱力学）・後期（量子論）の連続履修を推奨する

定期試験（約８０％）と、その他の小テスト等（約２０％）により、評価を行う。その他、授業への参加状況を考慮に加える場合もあり得る。

各単元について、どのような概念を学習するか予習しておくことが望ましい。復習は参考書中の例題や問題などについて、時間を取って理解することが望ましい。

熱力学の基礎を学習する．完全気体の性質，分子運動論，実在気体のモデルと状態方程式から始まり，内部エネルギーの概念から第一法則，エンタルピーと熱化学を習得する．エントロピーの概念と第二，第三法則を理解した後，純物質の物理的変態，相転移，Gibbsの相律，相図における相境界，相転移の分類を学ぶ．
混合物の熱力学，化学ポテンシャルを理解して，溶液の性質，2成分系の相図の読み方，熱力学的意味を習得する．また活量，理想希薄溶液，正則溶液について学習し，Debye-Hückel理論，化学平衡と平衡定数，電気化学と標準電極電位についても理解を進める．

熱力学の基礎を体系的に習得でき，化学的現象を論理的に解釈・理解できるようになる．

私たちはどのような世界の中のどこにいるのか、また、どこから来てどこへ行くのか、このような疑問は人類の最古の問いの一つであろう。本授業では、最先端の観測と理論的研究によって明らかになりつつある宇宙の姿をわかりやすく解説することで、このような問いへの自分なりの考えを持つことを目的とする。宇宙における時間と空間のスケール、キーとなる宇宙の構成要素（惑星、恒星、銀河やその構造など）について詳しく述べてビジュアルに紹介するとともに、その研究を支える技術や考え方についても論じる。
理学部宇宙物理学教室、物理学第二教室および附属天文台の教員によるリレー講義とする。

21世紀に人類が得た宇宙像の概要を理解し、宇宙の時間的・空間的なスケールからの科学的議論ができる。

高等学校での地学など理系科目の履修は前提としない。宇宙に対する関心があること。

レポート（毎回の授業ごとに、講義に関した考察等を書いて、PandA経由で提出する。毎回提出するレポートの評価点を集計して、成績とする。しっかりとした考察のないレポートは0点となり、それをいくら積み重ねても0点にしかならないことに注意。）

日頃から広くアンテナを張って、また批判精神も忘れずに、宇宙に関連するニュース等を積極的に見る。各回の講義内容と関連している話題の場合、その回のレポートに反映できると一層よい。

前期の2コマと後期の2コマの合計4コマはいずれも同一の内容である。受講希望者多数の場合、抽選により人数を制限する。

I will outline the environmental changes that have occurred during the Earth history, with a special focus on climate change. The lectures will address the main factors that control the climate, as well as their interaction. We will discuss in particular the human impact on environment and its consequences. To facilitate understanding and encourage active participation during the class, some materials and vocabulary in Japanese will be also provided.

The Earth Climate is the result of complex interactions among the components that make up the Earth: the Atmosphere (layer of gases), the Hydrosphere (water), the Lithosphere (or solid Geosphere), and the Biosphere (all living organisms). By learning about these interactions that take place on a variety of time scales, the students will be able to understand why and how the Earth Climate continuously changes.

During its history of 4.6 billion years, the Earth climate changed profoundly. At the scale of hundreds of millions of years, the Earth is now during an "Ice Age" period. However, at a 'closer' look, at the scale of hundreds of thousands of years, we are at present in a period of relative warming known as "interglacial period". From the early part of the 19th century, the human activity started having a pronounced impact on climate, being likely responsible for the current "global warming", due to high emission of greenhouse gases.

Contents (tentative):
- Components of the climate system;
- Current global environment: the Earth's energy balance;
- Origins and evolution of the Atmosphere, Hydrosphere and Continents;
- Climate change factors: the carbon cycle;
- Long-term and short-term climate changes from past to present;
- 20th century warming: fingerprints of human-related global climate change.

There will be 2-3 lectures for each of the topics above. We will conduct in total 15 classes, including the feedback class.

At the beginning of the course, you do not need specific knowledge of Earth Sciences. However, self-study is required to learn the essential knowledge necessary for the course.

Evaluation will be based on class attendance and active participation (30%), class-room exercises (30%) and a final examination (40%).

Students will be expected to do readings in preparation for the class. Class-related materials should be downloaded and printed out by students, from a dedicated website, which will be announced at the beginning of the lecture.

Students can meet me during office hours with prior appointment. The number of students who can take this class will be limited to a maximum of 60 students.

The quest to understand our origins, namely, the origin of the universe is probably one of the oldest questions of human kind. In this course the latest advances in our knowledge of the universe are learned in plain language. The spatial and temporal scales of the universe and the key components (planets, stars, and galaxies, and their structures) are described in detail, and the basic techniques and logic employed in astronomical science are discussed.

To obtain an overview understanding of the universe currently obtained by humankind, and to learn the basics of astronomical observations and theories employed in discoveries about the cosmos. Through the above, students will cultivate in themselves an scientific attitude which can be applied in their daily life and future career.

The following topics will be introduced (but not necessarily in this order):

At the beginning of the course, you do not need prior knowledge of physics or astronomy. Basic mathematical skills (but calculus needed) are desirable. Essential knowledge for the course will be provided as needed in class.

統計に関する知識は、実験、試験、調査などの結果を用いた実証研究を行う上でなくてはならないものである。生活に関わるさまざまな効果やリスクがデータとともに語られ、生活者としても統計に対するリテラシーが求められるようになった。企業活動では、情報技術の発展によって、日々膨大なデータが生成されており、その活用が求められるようになった。本講は、研究や、生活、社会・経済活動に不可欠な統計を、集計・分析し、理解する力を養うことを目的とする。

ただし、統計や統計学については、膨大な研究の蓄積が有り、その利用はきわめて多分野に亘る。しかも、各分野で独自の発展をとげている部分もあり、本講のみでそのすべてを扱うことは出来ない。したがって、本講では、統計ならびに統計学に関する基本的な考え方を中心に講義することで、より発展的な統計・統計学の学習への礎となることを目指す。

具体的には、二元分割表（２×２クロス集計表）の独立性の検定と関連性の強さの推定を主な題材として、統計データの収集、チェック、集計、分析、結果の解釈という一連の過程について解説し、統計データの発生、仮説検定と推定の考え方に関する理解を深める。

なお本講は、統計分析手順の機械的な利用や解釈だけを講義するのではなく、その基礎となる考え方を学ぶことを目指している。しかし、統計学的命題について、厳密な数学的証明は避け、あくまで統計・統計学のエンドユーザーとして必要とされる直感的な理解を目指す。

本講義の単位（2単位）を修得することで、文部科学省が定める数理・データサイエンス・AI教育プログラム　リテラシーレベル(MDASH Literacy)修了証の取得が可能である。
修了証取得の手続きについては、講義内で担当教員より指示がある。

講義を中心とするが、自習として統計分析ソフト（JMPやR等）を利用した演習を課す。
ソフトウェア JMP については、JMP Student Editionを各自で登録の上で自身のコンピュータにインストールして使用する。詳細は授業中に指示する。

「統計入門」では文系向きのクラス（前期月曜１限、後期金曜１限）を開講しておりますので、文系学部生はこちらのクラスを推奨します。

The world around us, is filled with numbers (data) that range over many scales of space and time and that describe its organization. In biology, traditionally, data feature parts lists and partial views of the connections between those parts. However, there is also a vast amount of quantitative (numerical data) that is accumulating, whether from sequences of DNA, concentrations of various biomolecules, or other types of data.

The ability to handle, process, explore, and visualize data are important skills for all students. While in this course many examples will be derived from biology, the mindset and basic analysis workflows are widely applicable in any domain of science, engineering and beyond.

In this course you will learn how to use R, RStudio, and the Tidyverse packages to clean, process, manipulate, explore, and visualize data.

This course is for beginners in data analysis and R and there is no specific science or math requirement.

Purpose
This course will introduce the wonderful world of proteins. Proteins are a type of organic macromolecule that are fundamental building blocks of life. While we hear a lot about proteins in daily life, in ads for protein shakes and protein powders, there are a few misconceptions about why proteins are essential and how they work. The many proteins manufactured by cells perform a broad range of essential functions; they are the molecular workforce of living organisms. Proteins catalyze metabolic reactions, replicate DNA, respond to stimuli, provide movement, and much more. Here, we will explore how proteins are constructed and fold into three-dimensional shapes, the kinds of bonds that hold these folded structures together, and the immense range of proteins' roles in our life. We will also explore how proteins are purified and characterized in order to understand their structure and function.

1. Gain a deeper understanding of proteins and structural biology.
2. Appreciate the important range of roles the proteins perform in our life.
3. Be familiar with the tools for studying, characterizing, and determining the 3D structure of proteins.

The following topics will be covered during the 14 weeks of the semester. Week 15 is an exam session and feedback class is given at week 16.

3. Levels of protein structure and forces that hold proteins into their three-dimensional functional form

7. Nature of proteins embedded in cell membranes and their role in signal transduction
8. Role of proteins in innate and adaptive immune response

English proficiency sufficient for understanding lectures, reading articles and texts, and participating in class discussions. A knowledge of high school biology and chemistry is also required.

Grading: Class attendance and active participation (20%), assignment and quizzes (30%), and final exam or coursework (50%).

Academic writing & listening

For the development of students' skills in English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP), English Writing-Listening A (EWLA) consists of three components: writing, listening, and vocabulary.

For practice with writing, students identify, recognize, or understand basic elements of academic writing and, then, recall and apply this knowledge in the process of organizing and revising a short academic essay of at least 300 words. Under the guidance of the instructor they learn necessary foundational academic writing skills as stated in the Course Goal section below.

For practice with listening, students take the online course known as GORILLA (Global Online Resources for International Language Learning Assistance) outside class. They are assessed on their listening proficiency through weekly online assignments, as well as the four tests that the instructor administers in class.

For vocabulary learning, students use the standard reference book titled “Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110.” Like the listening component, students independently study words from the general academic list that the instructor assigns (usually 50 words a week) and are tested on a number of these words weekly.

By the end of this course, students will acquire the following skills at varying levels. Students should be able to:
- Recognize and use basic academic words in English
- Process general academic discourse presented aurally
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of essay introduction paragraphs (i.e., hook, topic statements, general statements and thesis statement) and apply this knowledge to write suitable introduction paragraphs for short academic essays
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of body paragraphs (i.e., topic sentence, supporting sentences, detail sentences, concluding sentence) and apply this knowledge to write suitable body paragraphs for short academic essays
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of conclusion paragraphs (i.e., summary of main points, final statement) and apply this knowledge to write suitable conclusion paragraphs for short academic essays
- Recognize basic methods of maintaining the unity (e.g., definitions) and coherence (e.g., transitional words) of ideas in short academic essays, and apply this knowledge to writing.
- Recall and apply basic conventions (e.g., punctuation) when formatting short academic essays
- Understand basic paraphrasing techniques (e.g., using synonyms, changing structure) to integrate information from external sources, recognize basic citation conventions, and utilize this knowledge to avoid plagiarism
- Understand the writing process and utilize it for drafting and editing to produce short academic essays
- Combine knowledge of (i) the structure of a short academic essay, with allowances made for rhetorical style such as problem-solution and argumentation, and (ii) the writing process, and apply this knowledge to produce a short academic essay of at least 300 words

In-class activities are related to the contents of the textbook. Though there may be some adjustments in certain cases, the schedule of this course is as follows:

*Students must pass at least eight out of 13 learning units (Units 1-12 and TOEFL ITP Sample Test Unit) of the online materials in order to receive credit for this course.
The score for the listening assessments is determined by performance on four in-class assessments and the study record of the online materials (Units 1-12 and TOEFL ITP Sample Test Unit).

3. Writing assignments 60%
*Scores for writing assignments may include in-class writing tasks and participation in class activities as well as a term paper.
*Students must complete various writing assignments, including an essay of at least 300 words in order to receive credit for this course. Note that plagiarism must be avoided.

Students are required to study academic vocabulary from the designated part (EGAP vocabulary) of the "Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110" outside of class, and regularly take vocabulary assessments in class.

Students are also required to study the online listening materials outside of class through the GORILLA system. The materials for this course are as follows:

・KU Academic Listening (A) Units 1-12 (required)
・TOEFL ITP Sample Test Unit (required)
・KU Can-Do Self-Assessment (optional)
・Extra practice for further study (optional)

Students must complete each unit by the assigned deadline. If students miss the deadline for a certain unit, the unit will not be evaluated as a passed unit.

For details such as the deadlines and the in-class assessment schedule, please see the handout distributed in class and the information posted on the GORILLA system.

Students are advised to save the textbook PDF file in their digital devices.
If they want a printed version, they can print the file on a printer at home or a nearby shop, purchase a book-binder (less than 200 yen) at the Univ. Co-op shop in the Yoshida-minami Campus or the Clock-tower, and use a binding-machine there for no extra charge.
