自然科学を学ぶ学生に共通して必要と思われる力学を講義する。

質点の運動法則や種々の保存則を理解する。力学体系を正しく記述し、その運動を理解する。

以下のような古典力学の基本的内容を、フィードバックを含め１５回で各項目あたり２〜３週で講義する。

４．中心力による運動 太陽の引力のもとでの惑星の運動

この講義は主として高校で物理を履修した人を対象に行われる。物理未履修者には、別項の「初修物理学Ａ、Ｂ（非物理系）」の履修を勧める。

原則として定期試験の結果によるが、教員によってはレポート等の提出を求める場合もある。詳しくは各講義で説明する。

講義をもとに自学することを勧める。

地学を学んでいない学生でも地球環境の変化と人類の未来を俯瞰できるように，地球が誕生してから現在までの地球環境の変化や自然現象，そして地球システムとの関係について講義する．環境保全意識の高まりの中で，環境問題に対して適切な判断を行うことは，極めて重要な能力となっている．そのためには，地球環境で生起している諸現象の測定法，得られるデータの解析法並びに評価法等を多面的に理解する必要がある．地球の歴史を通じて，我々が目指すべき未来についても考察し指針を提示できるようになることを目的とする．

宇宙の中での地球の位置づけ，地球の歴史，その環境に関わるメカニズムを理解し，現在生起している種々の環境問題や人類の発展と関連させて考える考察できるようになる．
地球物理学，地球化学，地質学の分野の観点から地球システムを学びつつ，地球環境科学の研究動向と国際的な取り組みについてその概要を理解する．

以下のテーマについて、それぞれ1-3回の予定で授業を行う。

高校地学の内容に沿った講義内容ですが，地球・環境・人類を俯瞰する講義内容です．地球科学の初学者はもちろんのこと，高校において物理や化学の履修経験がない方でも理解できるように講義を進めます．
「基礎地球科学A (地球システムの歴史と変遷)」「基礎地球科学B (地球システムと環境)」を併せて履修することを強く推奨します．

出席と参加の状況，試験/レポートにより評価する．詳細は初回授業で説明する．

次回講義範囲については昨今の動向についてインターネット等で情報を収集し予習を行うこと．講義用ノートおよびテキスト等を見直して復習し，関連する事象についての動向を把握して理解を深めること．

基礎地球科学Aは同一時間帯にそれぞれ2クラス開講する。担当教員ごとに内容と構成が異なるので、シラバスを読んで選択すること。また、後期に基礎地球科学Bを履修する場合は、同一教員のクラスを履修することを強く推奨する。

地球で起きているさまざまな自然現象を科学の知識を用いて理解する基礎を学ぶ。そしてその現象が起きている地球という星の環境の変化を整理する。人類の周辺で起きる現象が地球という星の絶え間ない変動の一端であることを意識し、さまざまな時間的空間的視点を意識することを目指す。固体圏の現象に重点を置く。

身の回りで起きている現象の地球科学的な側面を理解する力をつける。特に災害に関わる情報を理解するための考え方を身につける。

以下のテーマについて、フィードバックを含め全15回で、それぞれ1-3回の予定で授業を行う。

地球科学の基礎知識を前提としないが、必要に応じて予習復習することが求められる。期末までにアカデミック・ライティングの技法を習得していること。詳細は初回授業で伝える。

基礎地球科学Aは同一時間帯にそれぞれ2クラス開講する。担当教員ごとに内容と構成が異なるので、シラバスを読んで選択すること。後期に基礎地球科学Bを履修する予定であれば後期のシラバスも確認すること。2クラスとも前後期同一教員のクラスを履修していることを想定して授業が構成されている。

Year after year, the effects of climate change (extreme heat waves, rising sea-levels, changes in patterns of precipitation, floods, droughts, intense hurricanes, etc.) are increasingly affecting--directly and indirectly--the physical, social, and psychological health of humans.

As a student of engineering discipline, you will be responsible--at some point of your future professional career, be it in the public or private sector--to device strategies, methods, and/or techniques to mitigate its effects, either globally or locally. But, in order to do so, you first need to understand how our planet works, how its diverse parts are interrelated, and how changes in the working of some of its elements could disrupt complete systems.

This lecture introduces the concept of system - the interactions among Earth's components, the principles of Earth's energy balance, with a focus on the three main subsystems - atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere - and their interactions across different timescales. The cause and consequence of climate change will also be reviewed.

The course provides an understanding of the interactions among Earth's components, the fundamentals of Earth's energy balance, and the principles governing the behavior of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere. With this knowledge, students will be able to explain important phenomena occurring on Earth.

This course consists of 15 classes including one feedback class. The classes will be grouped into several topics. Each topic will be taught in two or three lectures as listed below:

1. Introduction to Earth Systems (2 sessions)
Coupling and feedback loops in the Earth system.

2. Global Energy Balance (3 sessions)
The greenhouse effect, umbrella effect, and climate change.

3. Atmosphere (3 sessions)
Circulation of the atmosphere and precipitation.

・令和7年度までに「動物自然史II」を受講して単位を取得していた学生は令和8年度以降に本科目「動物自然史」の受講は認める。

・令和7年度までに「動物自然史I」を受講して単位を取得していた学生が令和8年度以降に本科目「動物自然史」の受講は認めない。

平常点（授業への参加と参加状況）とレポート試験の結果による。その評価方法や比率などは初回授業にて説明する。

授業前には授業内容の動物群や分類群の概要を調べ学習しておき、授業後は授業の要点を整理して復習することが望ましい。

オフィスアワーは設けない。相談や質問がある際には、メールで事前にアポイントをとることが望ましい。

アカデミックリーディング

『ゴッドファーザー』（フランシス・フォード・コッポラ監督、1972年）は、アメリカ映画産業の転換点となった作品であるばかりではなく、世界映画の名作であり、その図像や台詞が教養の一部となっている古典である。本授業ではこの映画の製作プロセスや受容を解説し作品を分析した英語の書籍 Jon Lewis, The Godfather, 2nd ed. (London: British Film Institute, 2022) を毎週6-8ページ程度のペースで読む。 E-learning (LMS) を通しての質問、授業での発表とディスカッション、映像クリップを使った解説・紹介を通して、含意の取りにくい洗練された表現や文化的な背景についての疑問を解消し、英語表現についての理解を深める。

・英語圏の知的な一般読者や大学生を対象とした英語をある程度まとまった量読むことで、英語を和訳せず英語として理解する力を培う。
・課題箇所について英語で要約を書いたり口頭でコメントを述べたりすることで、リーディングで得た知識をアウトプットに繋げることができるようになる。

・英語圏の大学の一般教養科目で読む程度の英語に触れ、最初は無理矢理でもある程度の量を読み、理解力を培う。

予習:
毎週、範囲(6-8ページ程度)を読む。和訳はしないこと。
・非常に重要である/興味深いと思った文には何らかの印をつけるか、書き出す。

アカデミックリーディング

本授業は、アカデミックリーディングに必要となる読解力や文法知識、教養を獲得することを目的とする。
映画・日常会話・ニュース・プレゼンテーションなどの幅広い教材を用いて、それらの間の文体的な特徴の違いや、多様な言語文化と思想について学ぶ。
前半は精読を中心とし、英文の正確な理解や、日・英語の発想や視点の違いについて扱う。
後半は速読・多読を視野に入れ、要約課題などを取り入れる。
適宜音声・映像教材を用いて書き取り課題を行い、リスニング力の向上を目指す。
また、『京大学術語彙データベース 基本英単語1110』を用いた小テストを行い、語彙力の維持・強化を図る。

・学術英語に資する語彙力を身につける。
・一定以上のレベルの英文を、辞書なしで正確に読解できるようになる。
・一定以上の速さの音声を聞き取ることができるようになる。

アカデミックリーディング

Reginald Rose作Twelve Angry Men（『十二人の怒れる男』）を講読する。この戯曲は、父親殺害の被疑者である少年をめぐる12人の陪審員によるディスカッション・ドラマであり、映画も高く評価されている。有罪を主張する圧倒的多数派に対し，議論の必要性を主張する陪審員はたった一人。その唯一の主張が徐々に審議に影響を与えてゆく。原動力となるのは，冷静さや粘り強さだけではなく、西洋文化に深く根ざしているlogicとrhetoricの力である。個性的なキャラクターたちの複雑な心理描写や，緊密な構造の中で繰り広げられる言葉の応酬を分析する。

社会に潜む諸問題に関する知識を深め意見を構築し、英語で表現する。
各シーンのポイントをさまざまな視点から英語で要約できるようになる。
説得力のある議論の立て方や進め方を習得する。
この作品に関する批評を適宜読み、その論に平易な英語で考察する。

アイザック・ニュートン（1643〜1727）は、万有引力の法則、微積分法、光の分析について明らかにし、近代自然科学の体系を確立した。同時にニュートンは自然の仕組みの背後に神の存在を意識する信仰心の厚い人物でもあった。この授業では「一般学術目的の英語」（English for General Academic Purposes, EGAP）の力を伸ばすことを目的として、Rob Iliffe, Newton: A Very Short Introduction (2007)を読み、ニュートンの発見の歴史的な意義とその人物像について英語で理解を深める。

教科書を使った授業（第2、3、4、6、7、8、10、11、12、13回）では、教科書の該当範囲のうち、最も印象に残った段落を一つ選んで翻訳し、その段落を選んだ理由・考察を書き添えた「考察レポート」（A4・1枚、ワード文書）を該当授業前日までにLMSに添付して提出する。授業中は「考察レポート」の内容を発表する（毎回8人程度）。授業の後半はグループに分かれて教科書の内容について議論する。

動画教材の授業（第5、9回）の授業では、授業内容と関連した動画を視聴して議論する。提出課題はない。

各課題は到達目標3項目の達成度に基づき評価する。授業に遅刻また欠席したり、課題の提出が遅れたりした場合は最終的な成績から減点する。5回以上授業を欠席した場合、期末レポートを提出しなかった場合は成績評価の対象としない（不合格）。

出席は教室のICカードリーダー（出席登録システム）で登録する。「履修の手引き」にあるとおり、ICカードリーダーの出席受付時間は「授業開始15分前から1時間」とする。

この授業における翻訳作業は考察の過程として、そして、英語という言語に直接ふれる機会として重要である。考察レポートの翻訳部分について、自動翻訳サイトなどを利用したことが判明した場合、最終的な成績から大幅に減点する。考察レポートの考察部分および期末レポートは、生身の人間として問いを立てて考える力を磨くことを目的としているため、文章作成のためにAIを利用したことが判明した場合、最終的な成績から大幅に減点する。

アカデミックリーディング

この授業では、これまで習得した英語力を基に、英語4技能の実用能力を高め、積極的に自ら行動して情報伝達を行うことを目的とする。特にリーディングの技能を高め、クリティカル・シンキングの基本を学ぶ。授業では、教科書「Life and Society in Modern Britain. Revised Edition」を用いて、現代イギリスの在り方を学ぶ。イギリスは、2012年のロンドンオリンピックを経てイギリスの社会は大きく変わり、2016年のEU離脱を問う国民投票から2020年の正式な離脱を経て、政治的に大きな変化を経験してきた。本書では、政治、歴史、スポーツなど様々なテーマを通じて、イギリスの刻一刻と変化する現代社会事情を学ぶ。
またリーディング以外にも、グループワークやペアワークなどを通じたコミュニケーション活動など、様々な課題があるので留意しておくこと。

　本授業は、冷戦期のアメリカ合衆国（以下、アメリカ）における科学研究の歴史に関する研究書を題材として、学術的な英語文献を読みこなすに必要な知識—学術英語に見られる文章構造の特徴、語彙、慣用句、文法など—を教授し、かつ、アカデミックな場面で必要となる「読解力・精読力」、そして「（可能なかぎり）短時間で文章全体の内容（とくに筆者の主張や論旨）を把握する力」を受講生に身につけてもらうことを目的に実施するものです。
　上記の目的に加えて、この授業では、アメリカにおける科学研究がいかに社会の多方面に影響を与えるものであるか、そうした科学研究が連邦政府や政府や軍部と深く関与することは何を意味するのかという問いに対して、歴史的事実を踏まえつつ、冷静かつ論理的に考えることのできる見識の涵養も目的としています。かかる見識に基づいて得られる「教養」は、受講生が科学者やエンジニアなどの道に進む際、いかなる環境や立場に置かれうるのかを予測することに資するものであり、受講生には、本授業を、これからの学生生活や卒業後のキャリアを構想する一助にしてもらいたいと思います。

　本授業では、英語で書かれた学術書を読解する際に必要となる「読解力・精読力」、「短時間での文章全体の内容把握力」の習得および向上を目標としています。

具体的には、

(1) アカデミックな英文の読解に必要な語彙・慣用句・文法の知識を習得すること
(2) 学術英語に見られる文章構造の特徴、わけても「トピック・センテンス」と「パラグラフ」の定義および英文におけるそれらの役割について理解すること
(3)「トピック・センテンス」を利用し、単語や表現、文法などが難解な箇所を読み解く方法を理解・習得し、「読解力・精読力」を向上させること
(4)「トピック・センテンス」ならびに「パラグラフ」を利用して「短時間で文章全体の内容を把握する方法」を習得すること

を本授業の到達目標とします。

【「一般学術目的の英語」としての位置づけ】
　この授業は、自然科学、社会科学、人文科学といった分野を問わず、アカデミックな英文において一般的に用いられる語彙や慣用句、文法を習得しつつ、学術書や学術論文に特徴的な文章構造と論理展開に慣れることを目的としています。

【教材の性質や主題】
教材とする研究書と研究論文は、

　(1) Stuart W. Leslie. The Cold War and American Science: The Military-Industrial-Academic Complex at MIT and Stanford. New York: Columbia University Press, 1993.
　(2) Jessica Wang. "American Scientists and Cold War Politics: Current and Future Research Directions." Historia Scientiarum, vol. 16, no. 1, 2006.

の2つです。

　(1)は、第二次世界大戦後のアメリカの大学における科学研究が、冷戦遂行の必要性から資金の面でも規模の面でも急激に拡大し、連邦政府や軍部、財団や企業との関係が緊密化していく歴史的過程を、マサチューセッツ工科大学（MIT）とスタンフォード大学を事例に跡づけた歴史書です。さらに同書は、かかる大学のあり様についての考察をも含んでいます。本授業では、同書の"Introduction"を取り上げます。この教材を通じて、第二次世界大戦後のアメリカの科学研究をめぐる概略的知識を習得しつつ、ときに抽象的で哲学的な議論がなされるアカデミックな英文の読解および内容把握の方法に慣れてもらいたいと思います。
　(2)は、アメリカのみならず世界の科学研究に冷戦が及ぼした影響や弊害を科学者個人のエピソードに注目して執筆された論文（アカデミック・エッセイ）です。順序としては、比較的短めの(2)から読みはじめ、読解に慣れてきたところで(1)の文章に移ります。

【受講者が教室で行う作業：「1周目」】
　本授業では、文献(1)と(2)を「3周」します。「1周目」は、各パラグラフの「トピック・センテンス」（詳細は授業で説明します）の「精読」に取り組みます。講義形式で、「トピック・センテンス」に関する理解度合いを確認します。すべてのパラグラフの「トピック・センテンス」を読み終えたあとは、クラス全体で、英文全体をいくつの「パート」に分けうるのかを議論します。

（1）「トピック・センテンス」の解説
（2）「トピック・センテンス」における「トピック」と「アイディア」を参照し、その段落の内容を「予測ないし推測」
（3）Thesis Statementの探索

ただし、パラグラフによっては、「トピック・センテンス」のみならずパラグラフ全体の精読をしてもらう必要がある箇所があります。ですが、受講生が自らそれらを見分ける力を習得すべきとの観点から、担当者から事前に受講生に伝えることは極力控えます（予習の方法については、下記「授業外学習(予習・復習)等」を参照）。

【受講者が教室で行う作業：「2周目」】
　 「2周目」は、「トピック・センテンス」の理解を踏まえたうえで、パラグラフ全体の内容を理解する授業を実施します。授業では、「1周目」の「パート」分けに沿って、グループを組み、グループ内で役割分担をして、以下のプレゼンテーションに取り組んでもらいます。

(1) 「パート」全体の概略の説明（英語ないし日本語）。
(2) 読解にあたって難解と思われる個所を、「パート」内から3〜5ヶ所選定し、スライド等を用いて説明。
(3) 担当者からの質問への回答。

「2周目」の授業の解説を通じて、受講生には「トピック・センテンス」がいかにパラグラフ全体の内容と情報を凝縮したセンテンスであるかを理解してもらうことが、「2週目」の学習のねらいです（予習の方法については、下記「授業外学習(予習・復習)等」を参照）。

【受講者が教室で行う作業：「3周目」】
文献の該当箇所を「2周」し終わった直後の1回の授業を「3周目」の読解に当てます。ここでは、教材の「論旨」について、受講生と担当者との間での擦りあわせ作業をおこないます。この「論旨」についても、受講生が自力で読み取る力を身につけてもらうべく、「1周目」と「2周目」の授業では担当者から受講生に伝えることは極力控えます（予習の方法については、下記「授業外学習(予習・復習)等」を参照）。
　
【履修の心得など】
(1) リーダーズなど中レベル以上の英和辞典を毎回持参して下さい。
(2) 出席確認の方法は、授業開始時の点呼とします。この際に返事のなかった人は、カードリーダーの読み取りによる記録の有無にかかわらず「遅刻ないし欠席」とします。「遅刻3回」で「欠席1回」とカウントしますので、十分注意して下さい。

【「2周目」の予習】
　まず辞書等を使わず、「1周目」の授業内容（とくに「トピック・センテンス」の内容）を想起しながら、内容を理解するように試みてください。次いで、不明な点について辞書や文法書で調べて精読をするという作業に取り組んでください。

【「3周目」の予習】
　「2周目」の授業の最終回で配布する「論旨」に関わる質問をまとめた紙（「論旨ペーパー」と呼びます）に回答を記入し、授業に持参してきてください（※「論旨ペーパー」は授業後に提出を求めます。また論旨ペーパーの提出およびその出来は「平常点」の一部に組み込みます）。

【復習時の学習】

アカデミックリーディング

本授業では、工学部の学生にとっても親しみやすいであろうサイエンス・フィクション（SF）小説のうち、不朽の名作とされてきたアメリカSF短編小説の3作品を講読する。時に難読箇所を伴う短編小説を英語原文で講読することにより、アカデミックイングリッシュの基礎・基本となる高度な英語読解能力を涵養することはもちろんのこと、工学部生の自由な発想をベースにSF作品を楽しみ、絶えず我々に思考を促してきた名作についての議論を重ねることで、理系学生としての思考の幅を広げることを目的とする。

1）高度な英語読解力を身につけ、文芸作品の英語をスムーズに読み解くことができる。
2）適切な辞書（生成AI含む）の活用法を武器に、難読の英文でも臆することなく、その意味を正確に理解できる。
3）辞書等の力を借りずとも、ある程度の速さで英文を読解できるよう、必要な語彙・文法知識を可能な限り多く身につける。
4）リーディングを通して学んだ語彙・文法知識等を、他の技能（リスニング・ライティング・スピーキング等）にも応用できる。

期末試験は、学期内に扱った英語表現を取りあげ、英文読解力の定着度を測ることを目的とし、正答率で評価します。
授業内課題には、授業時の発言、ペアワーク・グループワークへの貢献、プレゼンテーションなどが含まれます。十分かつ入念な予習をもとに、こうした活動に積極的に参加しているかどうか、などをもとに評価を行います。
授業外課題には、毎回の予習レポート課題、毎授業回後の授業感想レポート課題などが含まれます。提出課題としての質が保たれているか、課題に思考の跡が見られるか、剽窃など不誠実な行為はないか、期日までに提出できているか、などをもとに評価を行います。

予習
1.　指定された予習範囲を精読し、内容理解に取り組んでください。
2.　予習範囲を読み、感じたこと・考えたこと・疑問・意味が取れなかった英文・授業で解説してほしい場所などを、予習レポート（日本語200字程度）にまとめ、授業前日23:59までに提出してください。

復習
1.　授業で扱った範囲の英語を再度読み直し、語彙・構文の知識を定着させ、期末試験に備えてください。　　
2.　授業振り返りレポート（200字程度）を執筆し、学び・考えが深まったと思う部分を確認してください。
3.　各自の興味に合わせて、さらなる調査・研究や参考図書の講読を行ってください。

から学術情報やtechnologyに関わる記事を取り上げ、これを読解することによって知識を広げ、教養を深めると同時に、使いやすい英語表現を学ぶ。各自が自分の関心に沿ったキーワード検索を行い、記事を精選し、要約や部分和訳などを作成して、プレゼンを行う。互いの発表を聞き、英語でコメントする。授業で学んだ英語表現を習得し、専門分野における論文執筆、プレゼン、会話に生かす方法を学ぶ。

・特定の関心やテーマに沿った情報を英語で収集し、速読によって情報を選別すると同時に、選んだ英文記事を精密に読み解く力をつける。
・自分の専門分野、自らの今の関心、あるいは課題として提示されたテーマについて、英文記事や論文を通じて知識を広げ、深める。
・聴衆を前にリサーチと読解の成果をわかりやすく伝える力を養う。
・重要表現を暗唱し、応用する力をつける。

以下の計画は状況に応じて若干修正される可能性がある。

第一回：授業の流れと毎回の課題についての解説
・ NatureとGuardianが配信する最新のテクノロジー関連記事を中心にリサーチを開始し、自分が深く理解したい記事・論文を探し、選び、専門外の人にもわかりやすく説明することを目的としたレポートを作成するための準備を行う。リサーチ経過報告として、複数の記事・論文の要約などを課題として提出。

第二回〜三回
・各自のリサーチを進め、発表レポートを作成する。
・選んだ記事・論文を読解し、要約や和訳などを盛り込んだレポート提出。

第四回〜第一四回

一回の授業につき４〜５の英文記事・論文もしくはその一部を扱う。各記事の担当者による読解内容の発表。これについて応用できる英語表現などの確認。毎月に一回程度のペースで、応用例文について小テスト。お互いの発表を聞くことによって、視野を広げ、関心を共有する。発表については授業中に質疑応答の時間を取り、さらに全員がコメントを書いて提出。

第一五回　最終試験

For the development of students' skills in English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP), English Writing-Listening A (EWLA) consists of three components: writing, listening, and vocabulary.

For practice with writing, students identify, recognize, or understand basic elements of academic writing and, then, recall and apply this knowledge in the process of organizing and revising a short academic essay of at least 300 words. Under the guidance of the instructor they learn necessary foundational academic writing skills as stated in the Course Goal section below.

For practice with listening, students take the online course known as GORILLA (Global Online Resources for International Language Learning Assistance) outside class. They are assessed on their listening proficiency through weekly online assignments, as well as the four tests that the instructor administers in class.

For vocabulary learning, students use the standard reference book titled “Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110.” Like the listening component, students independently study words from the general academic list that the instructor assigns (usually 50 words a week) and are tested on a number of these words weekly.

By the end of this course, students will acquire the following skills at varying levels. Students should be able to:
- Recognize and use basic academic words in English
- Process general academic discourse presented aurally
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of essay introduction paragraphs (i.e., hook, topic statements, general statements and thesis statement) and apply this knowledge to write suitable introduction paragraphs for short academic essays
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of body paragraphs (i.e., topic sentence, supporting sentences, detail sentences, concluding sentence) and apply this knowledge to write suitable body paragraphs for short academic essays
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of conclusion paragraphs (i.e., summary of main points, final statement) and apply this knowledge to write suitable conclusion paragraphs for short academic essays
- Recognize basic methods of maintaining the unity (e.g., definitions) and coherence (e.g., transitional words) of ideas in short academic essays, and apply this knowledge to writing.
- Recall and apply basic conventions (e.g., punctuation) when formatting short academic essays
- Understand basic paraphrasing techniques (e.g., using synonyms, changing structure) to integrate information from external sources, recognize basic citation conventions, and utilize this knowledge to avoid plagiarism
- Understand the writing process and utilize it for drafting and editing to produce short academic essays
- Combine knowledge of (i) the structure of a short academic essay, with allowances made for rhetorical style such as problem-solution and argumentation, and (ii) the writing process, and apply this knowledge to produce a short academic essay of at least 300 words

Academic writing & listening

For the development of students' skills in English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP), English Writing-Listening A (EWLA) consists of three components: writing, listening, and vocabulary.

For practice with writing, students identify, recognize, or understand basic elements of academic writing and, then, recall and apply this knowledge in the process of organizing and revising a short academic essay of at least 300 words. Under the guidance of the instructor they learn necessary foundational academic writing skills as stated in the Course Goal section below.

For practice with listening, students take the online course known as GORILLA (Global Online Resources for International Language Learning Assistance) outside class. They are assessed on their listening proficiency through weekly online assignments, as well as the four tests that the instructor administers in class.

For vocabulary learning, students use the standard reference book titled “Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110.” Like the listening component, students independently study words from the general academic list that the instructor assigns (usually 50 words a week) and are tested on a number of these words weekly.

By the end of this course, students will acquire the following skills at varying levels. Students should be able to:
- Recognize and use basic academic words in English
- Process general academic discourse presented aurally
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of essay introduction paragraphs (i.e., hook, topic statements, general statements and thesis statement) and apply this knowledge to write suitable introduction paragraphs for short academic essays
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of body paragraphs (i.e., topic sentence, supporting sentences, detail sentences, concluding sentence) and apply this knowledge to write suitable body paragraphs for short academic essays
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of conclusion paragraphs (i.e., summary of main points, final statement) and apply this knowledge to write suitable conclusion paragraphs for short academic essays
- Recognize basic methods of maintaining the unity (e.g., definitions) and coherence (e.g., transitional words) of ideas in short academic essays, and apply this knowledge to writing.
- Recall and apply basic conventions (e.g., punctuation) when formatting short academic essays
- Understand basic paraphrasing techniques (e.g., using synonyms, changing structure) to integrate information from external sources, recognize basic citation conventions, and utilize this knowledge to avoid plagiarism
- Understand the writing process and utilize it for drafting and editing to produce short academic essays
- Combine knowledge of (i) the structure of a short academic essay, with allowances made for rhetorical style such as problem-solution and argumentation, and (ii) the writing process, and apply this knowledge to produce a short academic essay of at least 300 words

In-class activities are related to the contents of the textbook. Though there may be some adjustments in certain cases, the schedule of this course is as follows:

*Students must pass at least eight out of 13 learning units (Units 1-12 and TOEFL ITP Sample Test Unit) of the online materials in order to receive credit for this course.
The score for the listening assessments is determined by performance on four in-class assessments and the study record of the online materials (Units 1-12 and TOEFL ITP Sample Test Unit).

3. Writing assignments 60%
*Scores for writing assignments may include in-class writing tasks and participation in class activities as well as a term paper.
*Students must complete various writing assignments, including an essay of at least 300 words in order to receive credit for this course. Note that plagiarism must be avoided.

Students are required to study academic vocabulary from the designated part (EGAP vocabulary) of the "Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110" outside of class, and regularly take vocabulary assessments in class.

Students are also required to study the online listening materials outside of class through the GORILLA system. The materials for this course are as follows:

・KU Academic Listening (A) Units 1-12 (required)
・TOEFL ITP Sample Test Unit (required)
・KU Can-Do Self-Assessment (optional)
・Extra practice for further study (optional)

Students must complete each unit by the assigned deadline. If students miss the deadline for a certain unit, the unit will not be evaluated as a passed unit.

Students are advised to save the textbook PDF file in their digital devices.
