現代物理学の一つの柱であり、ミクロとマクロを結ぶ理論体系である統計力学の基本的考え方と方法の理解を目的として講義を行う。ミクロな運動が古典力学に従う場合と量子力学に従う場合の両方について、定式化と簡単な応用を述べる。

原子・分子の運動を記述する基本法則に、確率論的考え方を導入し、アボガドロ数のオーダーの粒子集団の巨視的振舞いを記述する手法を習得する。

授業で扱う内容は以下の通り。授業回数はフィードバックを含め全15回とし、各項目について2~3回の講義を行う。

1. 統計力学の考え方
　アボガドロ数のオーダーの粒子集団をどのようにして記述するか、その基礎となる考え方を簡単な例を用いて解説し、統計的手法が有用となる点を説明する。また、確率論の基本的な道具立てと自由度が大きい場合に成立する確率法則(中心極限定理等)について述べる。

2. 解析力学および量子力学の基礎
統計力学の体系を理解していくために必要となる解析力学と量子力学の基礎を、予備知識を前提としない形で講義する。

3. 統計力学の原理
古典力学と量子力学における微視的状態の概念とその上の確率分布を表すアンサンブル(統計集団)について解説し、孤立系における熱平衡状態を表す統計集団として小正準集団を導入する。ボルツマンの式によって微視的状態の数とエントロピーが結びつくことを示し、理想気体や調和振動子の系などへの応用について述べる。

4. 正準分布と大正準分布
　温度一定の系（熱浴に接した系）が従う確率分布が正準分布であることを示し、分配関数と熱力学関数の関係を説明する。さらに粒子数が変化する場合に、確率分布が大正準分布に従うことを示す。理想気体、調和振動子、スピン系、量子気体などへの応用について述べる。

5. 統計力学の応用
固体の比熱、ボース・アインシュタイン凝縮、金属中の自由電子、強磁性転移の平均場理論等について解説する。

「物理学基礎論Ａ」および「熱力学」の履修を前提とする（合否は問わない）。「物理学基礎論B」も履修していることが望ましいが、履修していなくても大きな支障はない。

定期試験期間中の筆記試験（100点）によって評価する。

講義内容を復習し、よくわからない点については他の受講生と議論したり教員へ質問するなど、内容の理解に努めること。

現代的な生物学，特に細胞以下のミクロレベルの生物学の基礎を身に付けるため、大学レベルの標準的教科書である「Essential細胞生物学」を教材に講義する。まず、DNAやタンパク質などの生物に特徴的な分子が細胞内でどのような機能を持つのか、またこれらの分子の機能がどのような構造的特徴に由来するかを講述し、さらに、これらの分子が、細胞・個体レベルの各種生命現象にどのように関係するかを概説する。本講義の内容は、さらに専門的な生物系の授業を履修するために必要な基礎となる。

生命科学の基本的事項について細胞を中心に分子から個体まで理解する。生命科学に関する議論を考察できる知識と思考を身につける。

「個体と集団の基礎生物学」とともに受講することで、現代の生物学全体を概観できる。

私たちが住んでいる地球ではさまざまな自然現象が起きている。科学的な視点からこれらの現象を整理して理解することを目指す。主に固体地球の現象を扱う。長い歴史を経て現在の地球が存在すること、私たちの周辺で起きる自然現象はその歴史の延長線上にあることを意識する機会となればよいと考えている。

地球科学の話題がニュースなどで出たときにそれをただしく理解するための基礎力をつける。地球と私たちの関係を考える視点に持つ。アカデミックな文章を正確に書けるようになる。

大学レベルの数学や理科を前提とはしないが各自が必要に応じて必要に応じて自習することがよい。各自の関心に合わせて野外を歩いてみる、学外の施設を見学してみる、などをお勧めする。レポート課題には授業外の活動を必要とするものが含まれる予定である。

授業内容の一部は全学共通科目の他の地球科学（文系向、理系向）科目と重複する。

Statistics is arguably the most important science in the world, because every other field of science depends upon it. Nowadays, science is becoming increasingly driven by large amounts of data. The key problem is how to extract knowledge from this data. Statistical analysis is a necessary step in solving this problem. This course will introduce the theory behind basic statistics and practical applications. Especially, we will cover observational studies, experiments, the normal distribution, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and linear regression.

Students will learn about basic concepts in statistics, and learn to apply them on real datasets. Students will develop a feeling for critical thinking when faced with data, be able to make hypotheses, and suggest relevant ways to test them.

Lectures 1 and 2. Introduction to statistics and data analysis. Statistics in the context of the general process of investigation. Introduction to numerical and categorical data. Simple ways of visual inspection (scatter plots, histograms, etc) and summary statistics.
Lecture 3 and 4. Probability. Formal introduction to probability, probability distributions, independent and dependent variables, and conditional, marginal, joint probability, and random variables.
Lecture 5. Distributions of random variables. Introduction to the normal distribution and its properties.
Lectures 6 and 7. Foundations for inference. We will discuss the principles of parameter inference, and the reliability of parameter estimates, including standard errors and confidence intervals. We will also introduce hypothesis testing and p-values based on these principles.
Lectures 8 and 9. The Central Limit Theorem and inference for numerical data. Practical applications, and the t-test.
Lectures 10 and 11. Inference for categorical data. We examine proportions, their confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and comparison.
Lecture 12. Introduction to linear regression. We will cover line fitting, residuals, correlation, and least squares regression. The assumptions, interpretation, and weaknesses of linear regression will be introduced.
Lecture 13. Multiple and logistic regression. We expand the principles of simple linear regression to cases with many predictors (multiple regression), and cases where the outcomes are binary categorical (logistic regression).
Lecture 14. Review of course material.

At the beginning of the course, you do not need the knowledge of concepts such as standard deviation or statistical distributions, which will be covered in class. A high school level understanding of mathematics is required.

Grading will be based on a final examination (50%) and small assignments (50%).

近年、コンピュータやネットワーク、各種センサなどの技術の進歩により、日々膨大なデータが生成・蓄積されるようになった。こうしたデータの活用に対する期待は大きく、データを適切に分析し、その結果から適切な判断や意思決定につなげる力が求められている。
「データ分析演習I」は、統計処理やプログラミングの基礎知識を持たない学生を主な対象とし、データ分析の基本的スキルの習得を目指す演習科目である。
ICT（情報通信技術）の進展やビッグデータ、さらにデータ表現の基礎等を確認したうえで、Excelや統計ソフトR、R Studioを用いて、データ分析の基本的な手法と考え方を実践的に学ぶ。
「統計入門」等で学んだ基礎知識を土台として、種々の実データも活用しつつ、分析目的の設定、データ分析の手続きや分析結果の考察、背景となる理論を実践的に学習し理解することを目指す。

なお、本講義（2単位）を修得することで、文部科学省が定める数理・データサイエンス・AI教育プログラム応用基礎レベル (MDASH Advanced Literacy) の修了証の取得要件を満たす。修了証取得の手続きについては、講義内で担当教員より指示がある。

1. データ分析に必要となる理論的基礎として統計学の基礎を理解できる。
2. ExcelおよびRを用いて、データ分析に必要な基礎的な統計処理やデータ可視化をおこなうことができる。
3. 回帰分析や因子分析などの代表的な分析手法の概要を理解し、統計ソフトを用いた効率的なデータ解析を実施できる。
4. 自らの専門分野に数理・データサイエンス・AIの知識やスキルを応用するための素地を養う。

前半では、一般に広く普及しているExcelを用いた分析をおこない、後半では研究の場で活用されることの多いRを用いた実践的な分析に取り組む。
また、演習の中で、各種教材の活用により統計検定2〜3級レベルの課題への取り組みも予定している。

Academic writing & listening

For the development of students' skills in English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP), English Writing-Listening A (EWLA) consists of three components: writing, listening, and vocabulary.

For practice with writing, students identify, recognize, or understand basic elements of academic writing and, then, recall and apply this knowledge in the process of organizing and revising a short academic essay of at least 300 words. Under the guidance of the instructor they learn necessary foundational academic writing skills as stated in the Course Goal section below.

For practice with listening, students take the online course known as GORILLA (Global Online Resources for International Language Learning Assistance) outside class. They are assessed on their listening proficiency through weekly online assignments, as well as the four tests that the instructor administers in class.

For the continued development of students' skills in English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP), English Writing-Listening B (EWLB) consists of three components: writing, listening, and vocabulary. EWLB aims to advance the skills in EGAP that students learned in EWLA.

For practice with writing, students analyze and evaluate basic elements of academic writing they learned in EWLA; they further identify, recognize, or understand more advanced elements; finally, they recall and apply all acquired knowledge in the process of producing an academic report of at least 1,000 words. By writing substantial academic reports more autonomously, students will acquire advanced academic writing skills as stated in the Course Goal section below.

For practice with listening, students take the online course known as GORILLA (Global Online Resources for International Language Learning Assistance) outside class. They are assessed on their listening proficiency through weekly online assignments, as well as the four tests that the instructor administers in class.

For vocabulary learning, students use the standard reference book titled “Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110.” Like the listening component, students independently study words from the general academic list that the instructor assigns (usually 50 words a week) and are tested on a number of these words weekly.
