理系学生を対象として、有機化学の基礎を修得することを目的とする。医薬品・農薬・機能材料等の有用物質を分子レベルで理解することを目指し、そのために必要な有機化学を系統的に学ぶ入口として、本講義を開講する。基礎有機化学IIを続けて履修することで、有機化学の全体像が把握される。

有機化合物における構造と物性、電子状態と反応性の相関を理解する。

以下のプランに従って講義を進める。
ただし、講義の進行度合いに応じて時間配分を変えることがある。

　科学の中でも有機化学は炭素を中心として扱う学問であり、機能性有機材料から生命現象まで、そのカバーする学域・産業は多岐にわたる。現在では、計算科学などを駆使して有用な分子構造を自らデザインし、うまく反応を組み合わせることで、ターゲット分子を狙って合成することができるようになりつつある。また一方で、体内で起こっているダイナミックな生命活動を記述するための一連の有機反応が徐々に明らかになってきており、場合によっては人為的に生命現象を操作することすら可能になりつつある。このように、人類未踏の機能物質を生み出したり、生命の神秘を分子レベルで紐解くためには、有機化学反応の根本原理である「反応機構」を理解することが必須である。
　本講義では、代表的な有機化学反応の反応機構を、電子の流れを示す巻き矢印を使って理解し、有機化学の基礎を習得することを目標とする。また、毎回の講義で解説する反応機構に結びつけて、機能材料開発や最先端の研究トピックについても紹介し、有機化学の魅力を伝える。
　学部・回生を問わず、多くの学生の履修を期待する。物質・生命に関わらず、分子とその振る舞いに興味をもつ全ての学生を対象とする。

基本的な有機分子の反応における電子の流れを、巻矢印をつかって自ら描けるようになる。有機分子の反応性予測や有機合成化学への応用に必要な基本的事項を理解する。

This course introduces key concepts and methods in analytical chemistry using practical examples from forensic science. Lectures are based on case studies and feature mock crime scene investigations. Students will learn how to detect and identify substances like drugs, poisons, explosives, blood, and DNA. 地球は、今からおよそ46億年前、原始太陽系星雲の中で、融けた岩石と金属からなる「火の玉」として誕生した。その頃の地球は、金星・火星・水星とお互いに似たような惑星だったらしい。しかし、その後の歴史の中で、地球だけに生命が誕生し、ついには人類という知的生命体が繁栄できるまでに至った。なぜ地球だけが、他の惑星とは違う運命をたどったのだろうか。そこには、どのような必然性と偶然性があったのだろうか。
本授業では、地球を地球たらしめている要因は何か、という視点を軸にしながら、46億年という悠久の時間の中で、地球が生命惑星としてどのように進化してきたのか、その変動の歴史を解説する。

地球史上の重要な出来事についての知識を基に、地球という惑星の特殊性・普遍性、地球が現在のような姿になったことの必然性・偶然性に関して自ら考察し、「自分なりの地球観」を持つ。

以下のテーマについて、１テーマあたり１〜２週の講義を、フィードバックを含めて全15回分行う。

Academic writing & listening

For the development of students' skills in English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP), English Writing-Listening A (EWLA) consists of three components: writing, listening, and vocabulary.

For practice with writing, students identify, recognize, or understand basic elements of academic writing and, then, recall and apply this knowledge in the process of organizing and revising a short academic essay of at least 300 words. Under the guidance of the instructor they learn necessary foundational academic writing skills as stated in the Course Goal section below.

For practice with listening, students take the online course known as GORILLA (Global Online Resources for International Language Learning Assistance) outside class. They are assessed on their listening proficiency through weekly online assignments, as well as the four tests that the instructor administers in class.

For vocabulary learning, students use the standard reference book titled “Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110.” Like the listening component, students independently study words from the general academic list that the instructor assigns (usually 50 words a week) and are tested on a number of these words weekly.

By the end of this course, students will acquire the following skills at varying levels. Students should be able to:
- Recognize and use basic academic words in English
- Process general academic discourse presented aurally
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of essay introduction paragraphs (i.e., hook, topic statements, general statements and thesis statement) and apply this knowledge to write suitable introduction paragraphs for short academic essays
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of body paragraphs (i.e., topic sentence, supporting sentences, detail sentences, concluding sentence) and apply this knowledge to write suitable body paragraphs for short academic essays
- Identify the locations, functions, and features of the standard elements of conclusion paragraphs (i.e., summary of main points, final statement) and apply this knowledge to write suitable conclusion paragraphs for short academic essays
- Recognize basic methods of maintaining the unity (e.g., definitions) and coherence (e.g., transitional words) of ideas in short academic essays, and apply this knowledge to writing.
- Recall and apply basic conventions (e.g., punctuation) when formatting short academic essays
- Understand basic paraphrasing techniques (e.g., using synonyms, changing structure) to integrate information from external sources, recognize basic citation conventions, and utilize this knowledge to avoid plagiarism

Academic writing & listening

The goals of this course are to: 1) improve upon academic writing skills learned in the spring semester related to academic essays, 2) improve academic listening, discussion, and presentation skills, and 3) develop and use academic vocabulary. Regarding academic writing skills, students will be expected to learn how to do the following: a) present ideas logically and persuasively in an argumentative essay; b) select, evaluate, and use outside information sources; and c) write multiple essays through revision of several drafts with feedback. Course essay assignments will contain common features found in academic reports (i.e., argumentation and persuasion) and highlight the analysis of data. In some cases, essays may involve conducting or replicating a scientific experiment, collecting and analyzing data, and writing it up with conventional structures (e.g., abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and reference list). Regarding academic listening skills, students will be expected to engage in intensive listening and note-taking exercises both inside and outside of class, with the focus on preparing for discussions, debates, and presentations. Regarding academic vocabulary, students will be expected to review previously learned vocabulary using the "Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110" outside of class and be assessed in class. Students will also be expected to take responsibility for their own learning by reflecting on their language learning experiences and achievements through self-assessment surveys (the KU Can-Do Statements).

By writing substantial academic reports more autonomously, students will acquire advanced academic writing skills as stated in the Course Goal section below.

For practice with listening, students take the online course known as GORILLA (Global Online Resources for International Language Learning Assistance) outside class. 一年次の中国語の履修によって、既に中国語の基本的な知識を身に付けた学習者を対象とする授業である。この授業では、学習したことを総合的に練習することによって、知識を定着させ、「聞く・話す」を中心的に実践的な訓練によって実力アップを目指す。

この授業では、食事、交通機関の利用、買い物、スポーツや趣味、観光などの内容について、簡単な中国語でコミュニケーションできる会話力を身に付けることを目標とする。

基本的に教科書に沿って進むが、必要に応じてプリントや補充教材を使用する場合がある。この授業では、食事、交通機関の利用、買い物、スポーツや趣味、観光などの内容を取り上げる。また、この授業では、情報交換を求めるタスクのような現実に近いコミュニケーション活動をできるだけ多く教室の中に取り入れ、学んだ中国語を使うことを履修者に体験させる。そのため、教員や隣同士での中国語によるペア・ワークが求められる。授業の進み方に関して、後期は第7課から行う予定である。基本的に2回の授業で1課のペースで進めていく予定であるが、履修者の実際の状況に応じて変更する場合もある。定期試験に関して、中間テスト（８回目）と期末テスト（１５回目）、試験に関するフィードバック（１６回目）を予定している。

成績評価の目安：授業の参加度（宿題など平常点）25%、定期試験（中間・期末）75%。詳細については授業の最初の時間に説明する。

予習は次の授業で扱うテキストの本文の意味を調べ、発音練習をしておくこと。復習は、授業で学んだ語句をつかった練習問題を解いておくこと。この授業では、実習の授業であるため、履修者が受け身ではなく、学習の主体であることが強く期待される。

中級レベルの論説文、新聞記事、エッセイ、物語などの多様なジャンルの文章を読む力を身に付けながら、学んだ文法、語彙・表現を使って扱ったトピックについて考察し、意見を述べる練習を行う。

The main goal of this course is for students to acquire reading comprehension skills necessary for understanding texts of various genres such as editorial articles, newspaper articles, essays, and short stories, etc. Students will also practice expressing opinions on the topics taken up and discussing about them using grammar, vocabulary and expressions learnt.

Course goals are as follows:
-To be able to apply reading strategies effectively to correctly grasp the meaning and contents of reading materials belonging to various genres.

日本語で高度な討論をおこなう技術を身に付けることを目的とする。そのために、以下の3点の育成に特に重点を置く。
（１）高度な日本語運用能力
（２）分析と日本語でのまとめ方
（３）活発な討論のための姿勢とスキル
討論を行う技術を身に付けることは、語学学習の最終目標の一つと言える。これまで自由な形式で議論を行ったことがある学生は多いと思われるが、高度な日本語表現を用い、一定の目標とルールに基づいた討論を経験することによって、さらに日本語能力を磨くことが狙いである。授業では基本事項の学習から徐々に難易度を上げていく。

The purpose of this class is for students to obtain advanced academic discussion skills. We will emphasize (1) fostering students’ language skills for using practical and sophisticated Japanese, (2) developing analytical skills and learning how to summarize in Japanese, and (3) developing attitudes and skills for lively discussion.

One of the ultimate purposes of language study is to acquire discussion skills. While most students have experiences in free style conversation or discussion, in this class, students will gain skills in raising their level of Japanese by participating in discussions conducted with a specific goal in mind and according to given set of rules. Each class will guide students toward improving their Japanese knowledge and discussion techniques in a step-by-step process.

受講生は社会科学分野の文章を読み進め、学術的な関心・理解を深めるのに必要な日本語運用能力を向上させる。また、読みとった内容について、専門用語を用いながら、読み手を意識した文章にまとめる。
本授業前半では、社会問題を扱った一般向け文献や専門分野の入門書など、学術的要素を含みつつ比較的読みやすい多様な分野の文献を読み、筆者の主張とそれを支える根拠を読み取る。
本授業後半では、前半部分並びに前期に提供される日本語上級（文献講読IA）で習得した社会科学分野の基本語彙、基本表現をもとに、まずそれぞれの学生が講読計画を立て、より専門性の高い文献の講読、要約の執筆を行う。


Students will read texts in the field of social sciences and improve their Japanese language skills necessary to develop their academic interest and understanding. They will also summarize what they have read, using technical terms, in a text with the reader in mind.

In the first half of the course, students will read and comprehend introductory books, general books covering social issues and articles of academic fields.　

In the latter half of the course, based on the basic vocabulary and expressions in the social sciences acquired in the first half and the first semester of Advanced Japanese (Academic Reading IA), each student will first make a reading plan, read more specialized literature, and write an abstract.

Students will read texts in the field of science and improve their Japanese language skills necessary to develop their academic interest and understanding. In addition, we will make use of Kyoto University OpenCourseWare (OCW) and engage in activities to understand lectures on specialized subjects offered in Japanese. Google や Amazon などのクラウドサービスプロバイダの台頭により，様々なコンピュータリソースやアプリケーションを，電気やガス・水道と同じように，必要なときに必要に応じて誰でも簡単に利用できる世界が広がろうとしている．本講義では，クラウド基盤技術をベースとしたクラウドプログラミングによるホームページ作成を通じて，インターネット，HTTP，HTML，Python プログラミング，モデル・ビュー・コントロールによるウェブアプリケーション開発，データベース利用，AJAX など，クラウド環境を利用したアプリケーション構築に必要な知識や技術の概観を講義・実習を通じて学ぶ．これにより，HTTP リクエストレスポンスサイクルを理解し，普段利用しているウェブの世界を技術の面から俯瞰的に理解することを目的とする．

HTTPリクエストレスポンスサイクルを題材にインターネットにおける情報のやりとりに必要となる技術・考え方の基本事項を理解することにより，俯瞰的な思考能力を習得する．

評価は，「HTML・CSS」「Python プログラミング」「モデル・ビュー・コントロール（MVC）ウェブアプリケーション構築」に関する5回の課題レポートと最終課題レポートを通じて，ウェブの世界を支える要素技術の理解度により判定する．

課題遂行のため，授業時間と同程度の授業時間外での準備や見直しが必要となる．

情報化が社会に及ぼす影響を理解し、情報機器や情報通信ネットワークなどを適切に活用して情報を収集、処理、表現する能力を養い、情報社会に積極的に参画する態度を育てる。また、情報や情報社会における身のまわりの問題を解決するために、情報の特徴と情報化が社会に果たす役割と及ぼす影響について、思考を深める。

情報活用社会に対する社会背景、現状分析、課題の認識、解決アプローチ等の習得を目的とし、その習得程度を評価する。評価の方法としては、授業への積極的参加　(20%) 、レポート課題(4回、合計で80%) とする。

前回受講のハンドアウトの復習。参考書籍の事前学習。

受講者が目的意識をもって今後の専門領域を学習でき、卒業後に実践的な応用ができることを講義目的とする。

プログラミング言語 Python は初学者にも学びやすい言語である一方で、さまざまな応用も可能である。近年では学術研究にも利用が広がっている。本授業ではプログラミングの初学者を対象に Python を用いたプログラミングを演習方式で学ぶ。

Python が実行可能なノートPCを持参して授業に参加すること。ノート PC への Python のインストールについては授業中に指示するので事前に準備する必要はない。

授業での演習や小テスト(70点)、プログラミング課題(30点)により到達目標の達成度に照らして成績をつける

プログラミングは実際にプログラムを書くことを行わなければ身につかない。ほぼ毎回の授業で授業中の課題と宿題（主に実施の容易な予習課題）を課す。また、これとは別に２回のプログラミング課題も課す。教科書の予習復習と併せて2単位の演習科目で想定している授業時間外学習（4時間）に取り組むことを求めるので、授業時間外学習の時間を確保して履修すること。

漠然とプログラミングができるようになりたい、という動機ではプログラミングはなかなか身につかない。授業の中で「こんなことに取り組みたい」という具体的な目標を見出すこと。
受講にあたってプログラミングの経験の有無は問わない。数学的な内容は含めないので文科系の学生でも十分に履修可能であり、実際に文科系の初学者でも理科系の受講者と同じように合格している。特定のオフィスアワーは設けないが、電子メールでの問い合わせなどは随時受ける。

R is a programming language whose purpose is to be able to process and organize data sets, and to represent these data graphically. Since the two last decades, R is widely used by scientists worldwide for data management and statistical analyses. This course aims to get students to start using R for analysing data and interpreting the output of basic statistical tests. Classes are taught in the form of practical exercises on computers.

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able (i) to design and statistically analyse a simple experimental plan using R, (ii) to find and perform by themselves an accurate test for solving their scientific question, even if it has not been specifically addressed during the course and (iii) to produce smart graphics for the presentation of analysed data.

Students will have to bring their own laptops to use in class that they will also use for homework. Students have to download and install R software and R-studio software before starting the course.

Grading: Homework (three to five, 50%), script and report based on the final exercise (50%).
In no case will English language proficiency be a criterion for evaluating students.
Class attendance is expected: students who are absent more than three times without sound reasons (documented unavoidable absence) will not be credited.

Work not finished in class time should be finished at home. Self-training is recommended: exercises will be provided.

留学するためにスコア提出が課されるTOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language)iBTでは大学での講義、研究、生活に関する問題が出題される。本講義では、TOEFL iBTのセクション（リーディング、リスニング、スピーキング、ライティング）全般を学習し、特にTOEFL iBTテスト形式のスピーキング、ライティング力の強化に注力する。それぞれのセクションの出題形式の理解を深めながら、自律的な学習を通じて、英語運用能力の向上を図っていく。

The ability to effectively communicate science in English is an essential skill for students and aspiring young researchers, whether it is for a lab report, preparing an abstract and/or poster or an oral presentation for a conference, a journal club, a thesis, or a full research article. Failure to produce a good narrative results in lost opportunities for both the writer and the reader. Developing skills in both written and oral forms of communication is therefore important to successfully progress in science.

This course will aim to improve student confidence in communicating science in English. Opportunities will be provided to learn and practice the basics of effective scientific writing and communication in English. Emphasis will be placed on learning the basic structures and logic of different forms of scientific communication and practicing through the analysis of scientific material and writing. Practical exercises to develop those skills, will include among others, preparing a good title and abstract, analyzing scientific text, and presenting science news and a full research article (journal club presentation) and their evaluation. Many exercises will be completed in small groups. The course will be targeted to non-native speakers of English.

This main objective of this course is to learn and practice skills for communicating scientific content effectively in English. The emphasis will be on structuring and organizing content, data and figures, and their interpretation to build a coherent narrative. Tips and tricks about writing and presenting as well as patterns to avoid will also be presented.

At the end of this course students will:
- Understand and be able to explain the basic structure and format of different forms of scientific communications
- Master key conventions and structures essential for effective scientific communication
- Have gained skills in organizing concepts and ideas into a coherent narrative, using the appropriate words, units, logic, etc.
- Be able to produce clear short text and make an oral presentation of a research article following the formal scientific style of writing and presenting
- Have acquired confidence and practiced critical evaluation skills by reviewing and providing constructive feedback about their peers' work.

In this course, students will work on their research projects and present and discuss the findings in English. Through the process, students will learn how to conduct research and develop English “four skills,” especially writing and presentation abilities.
This course is mainly targeted at students of the Faculty of Science. Therefore, students must choose research topics related to science. Also, this course is designed for students with a basic to intermediate level of English proficiency (upper-A2 or B1 in CEFR). Students should consider their English level before taking the course.
