Academic writing & listening

The goals of this course are to: 1) improve upon academic writing skills learned in the spring semester related to academic essays, 2) improve academic listening, discussion, and presentation skills, and 3) develop and use academic vocabulary. Regarding academic writing skills, students will be expected to learn how to do the following: a) present ideas logically and persuasively in an argumentative essay; b) select, evaluate, and use outside information sources; and c) write multiple essays through revision of several drafts with feedback. Course essay assignments will contain common features found in academic reports (i.e., argumentation and persuasion) and highlight the analysis of data. In some cases, essays may involve conducting or replicating a scientific experiment, collecting and analyzing data, and writing it up with conventional structures (e.g., abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, and reference list). Regarding academic listening skills, students will be expected to engage in intensive listening and note-taking exercises both inside and outside of class, with the focus on preparing for discussions, debates, and presentations. Regarding academic vocabulary, students will be expected to review previously learned vocabulary using the "Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110" outside of class and be assessed in class. Students will also be expected to take responsibility for their own learning by reflecting on their language learning experiences and achievements through self-assessment surveys (the KU Can-Do Statements).

By the end of this course, students will have acquired the following skills at varying levels. Students will be able to:
- develop an idea and produce a detailed outline.
- write an essay introduction that includes adequate topic background and a clear thesis statement.
- use outside research in a logical manner that provides adequate and relevant support.
- select proper (i.e., trustworthy) sources of information from outside references.
- paraphrase the main ideas and details from news sources and academic texts.
- avoid plagiarism when using a range of outside sources.
- produce in-text citations for a range of outside sources.
- use persuasive techniques to write a convincing argumentative essay.
- create a reference list for the works cited using common forms (e.g., MLA, APA).
- summarize audio or video content such as lectures, news reports, and presentations.
- recall and use academic vocabulary.

*Students will access online listening materials in a self-study manner to prepare for the listening tests.
*The listening assessment score is solely determined by the combined scores of the four in-class listening tests.

3. Writing assignments 50%
*Scores for writing assignments may include in-class writing tasks and participation in class activities as well as a term paper.
*Students must complete various writing assignments, including an essay of at least 1,000 words in order to receive credit for the course. Note that plagiarism must be avoided.

4. TOEFL ITP score 20%
*Students must take the TOEFL ITP on the date that ILAS designates.

Students are required to study academic vocabulary from the designated part (EGAP vocabulary) of the "Kyoto University Vocabulary Database 1110" outside of class, and regularly take vocabulary assessments in class. The Gorilla materials for the second semester are as follows:

Students must take four in-class assessments based on the KU Academic Listening (A) units. However, students are not required to complete the individual listening units.

ドイツ文化、社会理解のために書き下ろされた平明な文章を毎回読み進める。同時に、初級文法の積み残しを徹底的に解消しつつ、応用文法を一項目ずつ学んでいく。毎回のテーマはスポーツ、芸能から政治、経済、教育まで多岐にわたる。

最大の目標は辞書を用いたドイツ語長文の読解力を養うことである。使用教科書は独検2・3級対策も兼ねた内容であるため、それに相当するリスニング力や表現力の向上も同時に目標とする。

平常点（出席と参加の状況、予習の有無、積極的参加態度）50%、セメスター末試験50%の総合評価とする。

各回の授業時間の半分〜3分の2は講読形式で進める。一人ずつ指名して訳してもらうため、辞書を用いた予習は必須である。具体的な予習の範囲は毎回指示する。

中級レベルの論説文、新聞記事、エッセイ、物語などの多様なジャンルの文章を読む力を身に付けながら、学んだ文法、語彙・表現を使って扱ったトピックについて考察し、意見を述べる練習を行う。

The main goal of this course is for students to acquire reading comprehension skills necessary for understanding texts of various genres such as editorial articles, newspaper articles, essays, and short stories, etc. Students will also practice expressing opinions on the topics taken up and discussing about them using grammar, vocabulary and expressions learnt.

・読解ストラテジーを効果的に使いながら、中級レベルの様々なジャンルの文章を読み、正確に理解できるようになる。
・取り上げるトピックについて他の人と意見交換ができるようになる。
・日本語能力試験N3レベル/CEFR B1に相当するレベルを達成する。

Course goals are as follows:
-To be able to apply reading strategies effectively to correctly grasp the meaning and contents of reading materials belonging to various genres.

日本語で高度な討論をおこなう技術を身に付けることを目的とする。そのために、以下の3点の育成に特に重点を置く。
（１）高度な日本語運用能力
（２）分析と日本語でのまとめ方
（３）活発な討論のための姿勢とスキル
討論を行う技術を身に付けることは、語学学習の最終目標の一つと言える。これまで自由な形式で議論を行ったことがある学生は多いと思われるが、高度な日本語表現を用い、一定の目標とルールに基づいた討論を経験することによって、さらに日本語能力を磨くことが狙いである。授業では基本事項の学習から徐々に難易度を上げていく。

The purpose of this class is for students to obtain advanced academic discussion skills. We will emphasize (1) fostering students’ language skills for using practical and sophisticated Japanese, (2) developing analytical skills and learning how to summarize in Japanese, and (3) developing attitudes and skills for lively discussion.

One of the ultimate purposes of language study is to acquire discussion skills. While most students have experiences in free style conversation or discussion, in this class, students will gain skills in raising their level of Japanese by participating in discussions conducted with a specific goal in mind and according to given set of rules. Each class will guide students toward improving their Japanese knowledge and discussion techniques in a step-by-step process.

・討論の場にふさわしい適切な日本語で意見を表明することができる。
・論理的に意見を述べて、他者を説得することができる。
・傾聴の態度を身につけ、合意形成を目指した討論をすることができる。

受講生は社会科学分野の文章を読み進め、学術的な関心・理解を深めるのに必要な日本語運用能力を向上させる。また、読みとった内容について、専門用語を用いながら、読み手を意識した文章にまとめる。
本授業前半では、社会問題を扱った一般向け文献や専門分野の入門書など、学術的要素を含みつつ比較的読みやすい多様な分野の文献を読み、筆者の主張とそれを支える根拠を読み取る。
本授業後半では、前半部分並びに前期に提供される日本語上級（文献講読IA）で習得した社会科学分野の基本語彙、基本表現をもとに、まずそれぞれの学生が講読計画を立て、より専門性の高い文献の講読、要約の執筆を行う。


Students will read texts in the field of social sciences and improve their Japanese language skills necessary to develop their academic interest and understanding. They will also summarize what they have read, using technical terms, in a text with the reader in mind.

In the first half of the course, students will read and comprehend introductory books, general books covering social issues and articles of academic fields.　

In the latter half of the course, based on the basic vocabulary and expressions in the social sciences acquired in the first half and the first semester of Advanced Japanese (Academic Reading IA), each student will first make a reading plan, read more specialized literature, and write an abstract.

社会科学分野の一般向け読み物から始め、徐々にやや専門性の高い文章の講読を行う。口頭表現、要約執筆などの活動も取り入れ、学術的な関心・理解を深めるのに必要な日本語運用能力を総合的に向上させる。

Students will read texts in the field of science and improve their Japanese language skills necessary to develop their academic interest and understanding. They will also summarize what they have read, using technical terms, in a text with the reader in mind. In addition, we will make use of Kyoto University OpenCourseWare (OCW) and engage in activities to understand lectures on specialized subjects offered in Japanese. In this class, each student will first make a reading plan, read more specialized literature, and write a summary, based on the basic vocabulary and expressions in the field of science acquired in Advanced Japanese (Academic Reading IIA) offered in the first semester. This class will be co-taught by a Japanese language teacher and a science teacher.

Students will develop a reading plan for the following overviews in their field of specialization. Students will read texts according to the reading plan. Information technology profoundly impacts all aspects of modern society, including daily life, economics, governance, education, and various industries. It is, therefore, essential to acknowledge the historical development of information science and the evolution of its influence on our society if we aim for a deeper understanding and broader perspective on information-based societies. This lecture will provide foundational knowledge of information technology and the relationships between information technology and society. The course delves into the social impacts of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), information handling, information economics, intellectual property, media literacy, and social media.

The students will be able to articulate the impacts of ICTs on society and the critical issues related to the information economy and information society. They will also be able to develop their perspectives on information technologies, information ethics, and their interactions with society.

4. Information and law:
Freedom of expression, right to know, right to be forgotten, information privacy as well as intellectual and industrial property rights such as patents and copyrights (about 2 weeks)

5. Information and economy:
Economic transactions, search/recommendation models for products, information asymmetry, network externality, lock-in phenomenon, path dependence, electronic payments, e-commerce, advertising on the Internet, the impact of the Internet on the economy (about 3 weeks)

6. Information archiving:
Digital content archiving, digital libraries, usage of archived contents, information validity over time (about 1 week)

7. Digital governance:
Digital democracy, digital community, social media, cloud computing (about 1 week)

8. Social computing:
Human computation, crowdsourcing, collective intelligence (about 1 week)

The total number of lessons is 15, including one feedback session.

The evaluation will be based on your reports for assignments. There are two types of assignments:
- Assignments of short answer questions (50%): Each assignment will cover 2-3 weeks’ lecture contents.
- Two essay writing assignments (1,000 English words) regarding specified topics (50%).

All the assignments will be available via the LMS system.

Google や Amazon などのクラウドサービスプロバイダの台頭により，様々なコンピュータリソースやアプリケーションを，電気やガス・水道と同じように，必要なときに必要に応じて誰でも簡単に利用できる世界が広がろうとしている．本講義では，クラウド基盤技術をベースとしたクラウドプログラミングによるホームページ作成を通じて，インターネット，HTTP，HTML，Python プログラミング，モデル・ビュー・コントロールによるウェブアプリケーション開発，データベース利用，AJAX など，クラウド環境を利用したアプリケーション構築に必要な知識や技術の概観を講義・実習を通じて学ぶ．これにより，HTTP リクエストレスポンスサイクルを理解し，普段利用しているウェブの世界を技術の面から俯瞰的に理解することを目的とする．

HTTPリクエストレスポンスサイクルを題材にインターネットにおける情報のやりとりに必要となる技術・考え方の基本事項を理解することにより，俯瞰的な思考能力を習得する．

以下の項目について，それぞれ1〜2週の講義・実習を行う予定である．授業回数はフィードバックを含め全15回とする．

各自が所有するノートパソコン（Windows, Mac, Linux いずれも可）を持参できること（若干数の貸出ノートパソコンの用意あり）．インターネット，電子メール，ワープロについて利用経験がある，もしくは講義期間内に自習できること．また，内容に応じて学習支援システムを用いた30〜60分の予習を求める場合がある．

評価は，「HTML・CSS」「Python プログラミング」「モデル・ビュー・コントロール（MVC）ウェブアプリケーション構築」に関する5回の課題レポートと最終課題レポートを通じて，ウェブの世界を支える要素技術の理解度により判定する．

課題遂行のため，授業時間と同程度の授業時間外での準備や見直しが必要となる．

本講義では，各自が所有するノートパソコンを使用するとともに，学習支援システムを通じて，教材の提供，オンラインでの質疑，課題レポートの提出・返却を行う．使い方は開講時に指示する．

　情報化・デジタル化が社会に及ぼす影響を理解し、情報機器や情報通信ネットワークなどを適切に活用して情報を収集、処理、表現する能力を養い、情報社会に積極的に参画する態度を育てる。また、情報や情報社会における身のまわりの問題を解決するために、情報の特徴と情報化が社会に果たす役割と及ぼす影響について、思考を深める。
　特に将来グローバルな仕事への従事希望者、ハイテク産業の行政、投資・評価、コンサルティングの希望者、起業志向者、大企業やスタートアップのキーマネジメント志向者、経営管理などに興味をもつ学生にとっては、ITインフラ、サービス関連の全体概要と最新動向に触れる機会を提供する。
　受講者が目的意識をもって今後の専門領域を学習でき、卒業後に実践的な応用ができることを講義目的とする。当該領域で活躍中の第一線専門家による講義も予定している。

　情報化・デジタル化が社会に及ぼす影響を理解し、情報機器や情報通信ネットワークなどを適切に活用して情報を収集、処理、表現する能力を養い、情報社会に積極的に参画する能力の獲得を目指す。また、価値の創出（クリエイティブ・デザイン）と価値の良さがわかる（サービス・リテラシー）人材の教育を行う上での基礎知識を習得する。

　情報活用社会に対する社会背景、現状分析、課題の認識、解決アプローチ等の習得を目的とし、その習得程度を評価する。評価の方法としては、授業・演習への積極的参加　(20%) 、レポート課題(4回、合計で80%) とする。

事前配布の講義資料および参考書籍の事前学習。講義受講後の講義資料の復習。

プログラミング言語 Python は初学者にも学びやすい言語である一方で、さまざまな応用も可能である。近年では学術研究にも利用が広がっている。本授業ではプログラミングの初学者を対象に Python を用いたプログラミングを演習方式で学ぶ。

- Python によるプログラムの編集と実行についての基本操作ができるようになる。
- Python プログラムを構成する基本的要素の機能と書式について説明し、例題を用いて実行例を構成できるようになる。
- Python を用いて簡単なプログラムを自ら設計、実装、テストできるようになる。

Python が実行可能なノートPCを持参して授業に参加すること。ノート PC への Python のインストールについては授業中に指示するので事前に準備する必要はない。

授業での演習や小テスト(70点)、プログラミング課題(30点)により到達目標の達成度に照らして成績をつける

プログラミングは実際にプログラムを書くことを行わなければ身につかない。ほぼ毎回の授業で授業中の課題と宿題（主に実施の容易な予習課題）を課す。また、これとは別に２回のプログラミング課題も課す。教科書の予習復習と併せて2単位の演習科目で想定している授業時間外学習（4時間）に取り組むことを求めるので、授業時間外学習の時間を確保して履修すること。

漠然とプログラミングができるようになりたい、という動機ではプログラミングはなかなか身につかない。授業の中で「こんなことに取り組みたい」という具体的な目標を見出すこと。
受講にあたってプログラミングの経験の有無は問わない。文科系の学生でも十分に履修可能であり、実際に文科系の初学者でも理科系の受講者と同じように合格している。
プログラミングについては生成 AI の利用が進んでいる。授業計画には記載していないが受講にあたって生成 AI の適切な利用について指示する。
特定のオフィスアワーは設けないが、電子メールでの問い合わせなどは随時受ける。
