共通・教養科目としてのスペイン語コースの目的は、スペイン語学習を通じて、現代世界の中での自分の位置を確認することです。
　「教養」とは、世界における自分の位置を知るための地図です。学習を通じて各自が作り上げていく「教養」地図の一部を、スペイン語学習を通じて構成していきます。また、地図だけがあっても、現在地がわかっていなければ、人生の道のりを考えることができません。現在地をつかむため、スペイン語圏の社会や文化を参照しつつ、自分という存在を社会的に認識するという作業も行います。スペイン語圏は地理的に広範囲にまたがると同時に、内部に大きな文化的・言語的・社会的・歴史的多様性を抱えています。したがって、自分という存在を相対化するために適切な「なにか」がみつかる可能性も比較的高いと言えるでしょう。そうした特徴を活用しつつ、「教養」地図に自分の現在地を書き込み、自分の将来についても考えてみましょう。

Discovering Italy 1. Italian Language and Culture (Elementary to Intermediate)


Through a number of authentic dialogues in Italian, the course aims to provide the tools for conversation in different situations and on various topics, including but not limited to travel, music, literature, cinema, food, and sport.

In this journey, students will learn how to grasp the key points in an authentic conversation between two or more Italians, and, through some group role-playing activities, they will learn how to communicate effectively in Italian. They will also have many chances to learn about some of the most exciting aspects of Italian culture, between tradition and innovation, familiarizing themselves with the lexicon of everyday life, travel, and leisure.

Therefore, they will acquire confidence in listening authentic spoken Italian, and they will achieve a solid command of the Italian language in its written and oral production, expanding their vocabulary, improving pronunciation, and strengthening grammatical and syntactic skills.

Students will use Italian to interact during classes. They will learn to manage the fundamental communication functions, understanding and producing simple - oral and written - Italian texts. They will become familiar with the conversation on essential daily life topics and cultural matters. They will become able to listen and comprehend authentic dialogues in Italian. They will demonstrate awareness of basic grammatical structures and vocabulary. They will deepen their knowledge of Italian culture. They will watch and discuss a film in Italian.

2-13: Discover Italy: our journey will take the students into some particular situations: trips throughout Italy, a night at the restaurant, experiences in other European countries, organizing schedules with friends, prepare parties, and so on. Many elements of Italian culture, such as art, sport, literature, food, fashion, music and entertainment will be introduced during the course.

この授業では、日本語を使った様々なタスクに挑戦しながら、それらの遂行に必要な会話力を養う。更に、タスクを行う上で必要となる語彙・表現、文法を習得する。タスクに取り組むことを通して大学生活に必要な実践的な会話力を育成することを本授業の目的とする。
By the way of challenging various tasks this course aims at cultivating conversation abilities necessary for conducting them. We will also study vocabulary and expressions, in addition to grammar necessary for conducting each task. Overall, this course aims at providing students with opportunities in acquiring practical communication skills necessary in campus life.

This course is for students with Intermediate to Low-Advanced English skills. Students with higher English skills may not take the course. The course practices English skills that are necessary for business.

ブータン王国における人々の暮らしを学びながら我々自身の暮らしを見直すことがこの授業のテーマである。ブータン王国について見聞きした人の多くの日本人がブータンに懐かしさを覚えるのはなぜだろうか。ブータン王国の暮らしを学び、我々の社会が得てきたもの、失ったものを考え、未来に向かって我々が歩むべき道を学生とともに模索していきたい。

ブータンの暮らしの実情を部分的に理解するとともに自ら課題を決めて発表を行うことにより自主的に課題を見つけ、それを表現する能力を養う。

The purpose of English Academic Discussion is to equip students with the communication skills necessary to actively engage within academic and professional communities, improve critical thinking and discussion skills, and expand viewpoints on a variety of topics from the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. The course will be focused mainly on group discussions. Students will be asked to watch videos and write notes for homework and actively participate in discussions.

Broadly, in part one [semester: April-September], the course will introduce students to some of the main ‘historiographical debates’ that have shaped our understanding of modern science. In the standard narrative, the period between the discoveries of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and the mathematical formulations of Isaac Newton (1642-1726/27) has generally been considered to have inaugurated the scientific revolution. This course, however, will aim to view the same period as actually marked by an equally important shift that defined modern science: heralding the end of Aristotelianism and the re-emergence of Platonism.

By introducing students to some of the historiographical debates on the origins and defining features of what constitutes modern science, this course aims to achieve three main goals: a) a basic introductory understanding of some of the main ideas of the leading thinkers on modern science; b) a biographical sketch of the natural philosophers of the period leading up to the ‘Scientific Revolution’ and c) how history as a disciplinary field debates modern science as a distinct historical moment.

Each class will comprise a 90 minute session; involving a lecture of 60 minutes and followed by a 30 minute interactive discussion in which student participation will also be elicited through either group or individual presentations.
Four themes will be covered in this class and each theme will be covered in three to four weeks.(Total : 14 classes and one feedback )

There will be a regular cycle of written submissions and feedback through class discussions. The idea is to develop a credible capacity for reading and writing amongst those who take up the course.

Evaluations will be based on two tutorial assignments, which will carry a 50% grade for each.

Students will be expected to have read at least five pages of pre-assigned reading, at the very minimum, before attending each class.

Students can meet me during office hours with prior appointment.

This course will introduce the student to the “intellectual history” of Japan, both as a body of knowledge, and as a particular historical method. That is, besides deepening our understanding of the philosophies, ideologies, and mentalities that helped shape Japan, we will also develop the skills necessary to meaningfully examine these ideas as academic problems. Rather than a chronological survey, the approach of this course is thematic. Each class will focus on the significance of one particular idea/phenomenon. The key terms for this semester will be space, time, and culture.

Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:
(1)be familiar with the presuppositions and narratives of historical theory.
(2)have a general understanding of the ideas and ideologies of the Japanese early modern and modern period.
(3)learn to use the historical method to question cultural assumptions.

As a survey introduction class, this course will require no reading preparations, but basic competence in English is required to fruitfully engage with the class content. Furthermore, although not a strict requirement, it is recommended that the student has a grasp of the basic outlines of Japanese history.
