This course is an introductory undergraduate course that teaches the fundamentals of microeconomics. For some students, it provides a solid foundation for economic analysis and thinking that can last throughout their education and subsequent professional careers. For other students, it may provide a foundation for many years of study in economics, business, or related fields.

This course begins with an introduction to supply and demand and the basic forces that determine an equilibrium in a market economy. Next, it introduces a framework for learning about consumer behavior and analyzing consumer decisions. We then turn our attention to firms and their decisions about optimal production, and the impact of different market structures on firms' behavior. The final section of the course provides an introduction to some of the more advanced topics that can be analyzed using microeconomic theory. These include antitrust policy and negative and positive externalities.

Introduction
For this academic year, both Political Science I and II will be focusing on the political philosophy subfield. This subfield deals with perennial questions and basic problems in politics, which must continuously be examined and inquired, even though most members of political societies often consider them settled and no further arguments needed. Such questions, for example, are: What is a good life? What is a good political society? What is justice? What is power?

Toward the end of Political Science I and II, hopefully, students will: a) possess basic understanding of political philosophy, and will employ such knowledge as a guide to probe more deeply and sophisticatedly on the intertwining relations of three notions: youth, education and utopia; b) realize that the two introductory courses are very crucial not only for their quotidian lives, but also for each as a member of a political society as well as an earthling on this delicate yet fragile earth.

Issue and Approach
In general, the introduction to political philosophy taught in many countries has been dominated by the body of knowledge that only follows various traditions of the so-called “western worlds.” Hence, any attempts to discern basic political problems have predominantly been influenced by such traditions from such worlds. I myself have, to a large degree, been influenced by those traditions, too. Nonetheless, in order for our journey throughout this year to be broader, I have also chosen a few philosophical texts from some traditions of the “eastern worlds.” With limited time, however, we will be focusing only on two of the most important strands of the so-called “Chinese civilization”: classical Confucianism and classical Daoism. Altogether for this academic year, there will be three sets of issues:

Part 3: Human Togetherness (?): Be(com)ing Humans, How should humans be?, and “The Political”

While the first two parts are the contents of Political Science I, the third part is the focus of Political Science II. Students who intend to take only one of these two courses must be clear which tradition they would like to prioritize. If it is the “western”, they should take Political Science I. If it is the “eastern”, Political Science II is their choice.

The two courses aim to enable students:

- To understand some traditions of political philosophy at the introductory level;
- To understand certain views of political philosophy regarding youth, education, and utopia;
- To pay attention, to think and to question our quotidian lives’ surroundings by employing perspectives from political philosophy.

In this course, close reading of the texts is the key method of learning. Students will be trained - at the introductory level -- how to read philosophical texts. We will, therefore, be reading parts of each text, keeping in mind that we will be probing more deeply and sophisticatedly on:

First, the intertwining relations of the three notions: youth, education and utopia.

Second, a perspective on “Utopia”: Plato’s Republic

In the first semester, the course is divided into two parts:

- Before the midterm exam: There will be a series of lectures, preparing you to be in a sound position to later appreciate Plato's Republic. It will make you become aware of some key issues, and the value in discussing them. The lecture is, thus, to establish moments of engagement.

この授業の目的は、西洋文明にとって最も重要な書物といってよい「聖書」を英語で講読することにより、格調高い文章を読みこなす英語力を習得するとともに、聖書に現れる基本的な事柄や思想についてもある程度の理解をすることである。

格調高い聖書の英語を読みこなすことを到達目標とする。

ヘブライ語聖書（いわゆる旧約聖書）の英語訳（数種類）を用い、聖書において現れる主要なテーマごとに（天地創造、贖罪、メシア論など）、関連する箇所を読む。場合によっては、聖書原典のみならず、後代のユダヤ教やキリスト教における聖書解釈の該当箇所も英語訳で読み、参考にする。

１つのテーマにつき３回ほど授業を行い、４週目には、そのテーマに関する理解を深めるためのまとめのテストを行う。これを繰り返し行い、前期においては３〜４の聖書の主要なテーマを学ぶ。

この授業では, A.K.Dixitの"Optimization in Economic Theory (Second Edition)"（以下, 教科書と呼ぶ）を読み, 経済学における最適化理論の基本を勉強する。 最適化は経済学の中心的な原理の一つであり, 経済学のあらゆるところに登場する。 代表的な例は, 家計が効用を最大化するように消費や労働供給を決定する問題, 企業が利潤を最大化するように生産計画を決定する問題, 社会厚生を最大化する政府の問題などである。 これらの問題は一見異なるものに見えるが, 共通の数学的構造を有している。 本講義では, その数学的構造を学ぶことで, これらの問題が共通してもつ経済学的な直観を見出すことを目標とする。

具体的には, 等式・不等式制約付き最適化問題を主に取り扱う。 それらの代表的な解法であるLagrangeの定理やKuhn-Tuckerの定理を学ぶ（Chapters 1-3）。更に, これらの定理に登場するLagrange乗数がもつ経済学的な含意について学習する (Chapter 4）。 また, 包絡線定理についても取り扱う(Chapter 5）。また, 英語で経済学や数学を学ぶ力を身に付けるために, 重要な語彙をピックアップしたり, や数学的な議論を英語で書く方法を説明したりもする。

ある国の経済社会がより良く発展するためには、適切な法制度と良い統治が欠かせない。国際協力の現場でも、発展途上国や経済移行国に対する法制度整備やガバナンス支援は重要である。学術的な研究成果を具体的な課題解決に役立てる際にも、何らかの法制度として社会実装するプロセスを要する場合が多い。

では、どのような制度やガバナンスが経済社会の持続可能な発展を促進しうるのか？地球規模課題の解決を視野に入れると、今後の法制度やガバナンスはいかにあるべきか？こうした問いに答え、経済社会の発展を促す法制度とガバナンスの在り方を探求することが本講義の目的である。

本講義の考察と実践の対象は、法制度が未整備の開発途上国だけでなく、先進国の法制度改革も範疇に入る。また、環境保護、防災減災、省エネなど、理工学的な知見に基づいて整備される法制度分野も増えていることから、文理融合の幅広い視野を持った専門家の活躍が今後一層期待される。

本講義では、地球が「水惑星」として誕生・進化してきた地球惑星科学的条件に焦点を当てる。
他の地球型惑星との比較を通じて、放射平衡温度（黒体温度）と惑星探査機によって観測された惑星表面温度の違いを理解し、それぞれの惑星大気がもたらす温室効果の違いについて学ぶ。さらに、暴走温室効果や雪玉地球の形成条件を題材として、水惑星として存在しうる条件について考察する。

また、地球史の学習を通じて、海洋および大気の形成条件、ならびに海洋循環や水文循環プロセスが地球の気候安定性にもたらしてきた効果について学ぶとともに、それらのシステムが機能しなくなった場合に生じる極端事象について理解を深める。
加えて、過去の大量絶滅事象を学ぶことにより、地球生態系を長期的に維持するための要因について考察する。

さらに、地球と類似した環境を持ちうる太陽系外惑星について、その分類方法やハビタブルゾーンの定義を、太陽系外惑星データベース ExoKyoto を用いて学ぶ。

This lecture focuses on the planetary-scientific conditions that enabled the Earth to form and evolve as a “Water Planet.” Through comparisons with other terrestrial planets, students will examine differences between radiative equilibrium (blackbody) temperatures and observed planetary surface temperatures obtained by space missions, and analyze how atmospheric greenhouse effects vary among planets. The course also explores the conditions under which a planet can exist as a water planet, using runaway greenhouse effects and Snowball Earth scenarios as key examples.

Through the study of Earth’s history, students will learn about the formation of the oceans and atmosphere, as well as the climate-stabilizing roles of ocean circulation and the hydrological cycle. The lecture also addresses extreme events that may arise when these systems fail to function.
In addition, by examining past mass extinction events, students will consider the essential factors required to sustain Earth’s ecological systems over geological timescales.

The course further introduces extrasolar planets that may possess Earth-like environments. Students will learn methods for classifying exoplanets and defining the habitable zone using the ExoKyoto exoplanet database.

This lecture aims to deepen students’ understanding of both the uniqueness and commonality of the Earth system within the solar system. Through the study of Earth’s history, students will examine how oceans and the hydrological cycle have contributed to the stability of Earth’s climate system and the development of ecosystems.

By critically analyzing past mass extinction events, students will further consider how humanity in the Holocene might avoid the ongoing risk of a new mass extinction. The objective of this lecture is for students to develop a solid understanding of the formation processes of terrestrial planets and the conditions that enabled the Earth, uniquely, to function as a water planet capable of sustaining life.

地球惑星形成の歴史②：雪玉地球時代の地質学的証拠と、大気組成への影響（過酸化水素生成による酸素濃度増加仮説）、および海洋凍結による海洋循環停止の影響について学ぶ。

地球惑星形成の歴史③：ペルム紀末大量絶滅（P–T境界事変）および海洋無酸素事変（Oceanic Anoxic Events：OAE）について学ぶ。

【第13回】
地球惑星形成の歴史④：白亜紀末大量絶滅（K–Pg〔K–T〕境界事変）と隕石衝突説、その証拠とされる境界層中のイリジウムについて学ぶ。

【第14回】
地球惑星形成の歴史⑤：新生代および完新世における大量絶滅の可能性について学ぶ。

【第15回】
太陽系外惑星データベース ExoKyoto/ExoKyoto3D を用いて、太陽系内外の惑星系およびハビタブルゾーンについて学び、水惑星を守り生命を維持するための条件について考察する。

なお、講義期間中の晴天日の夜には、希望者を対象として、望遠鏡や双眼鏡を用いた太陽系惑星および天体観測を行う。

Lecture Contents (English)

First & Second
Overview of the course. Introduction to the Earth as a water planet through intercomparison with other terrestrial and Jovian planets in the solar system. Radiative equilibrium (blackbody) temperature calculations using solar constants and planetary albedo, and comparison of atmospheric composition and greenhouse effects among planets.

Third & Fourth
Critical conditions for ocean formation: runaway greenhouse effects and critical fluxes, using Venus as a case study. The role of solar radiation and solar activity in shaping planetary environments is also discussed.

Fifth
Conditions for ocean formation II: Snowball Earth as an example to study the formation and shutdown of hydrological processes.

Sixth
Atmosphere–ocean interactions: El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), with an introduction to basic physical oceanography.

Seventh
Impacts of solar activity on the Earth’s environment: space weather.

Eighth
Long-term variations in solar activity and their influence on Earth’s climate: space climate.

Ninth & Tenth
History of planetary formation I: formation of the Moon based on the Giant Impact hypothesis and its importance for the present Earth environment.

Eleventh
History of planetary formation II: geological evidence of Snowball Earth, its effects on atmospheric composition, and the consequences of a complete shutdown of ocean circulation.

Twelfth
History of planetary formation III: the Permian–Triassic (P–T) mass extinction event and Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAE).

Thirteenth
History of planetary formation IV: the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg / K–T) mass extinction event, asteroid impact hypotheses, and iridium anomalies at the boundary layer.

Fourteenth
History of planetary formation V: potential mass extinction events in the Cenozoic and Holocene, including hypotheses involving asteroid impacts and volcanic activity.

Fifteenth
Concepts of the “Goldilocks (Habitable) Zone” through the study of solar and extrasolar planetary systems using ExoKyoto, an exoplanet database, and discussion of conditions required to sustain water planets and life.

Feedback

Optional astronomical observation sessions for inner and outer planets are scheduled on clear nights during the course period, using refracting telescopes and binoculars.

Students are strongly encouraged to regularly follow information related to space science, including updates and educational programs available through the internet and television.

講義期間中、望遠鏡や双眼鏡を用いたフィールドでの天体観測を随時案内する予定である。
ただし、京都大学吉田キャンパス内で実施する場合を除き、少人数での移動を伴うため、参加を希望する学生は 学研災（学生教育研究災害傷害保険・付帯賠償責任保険） に加入していることを必須とする。

また、移動を伴う観測については、希望者が多数の場合、交通費を学生の実費負担とする場合がある。
参考として、平成26〜30年度には、大学周辺において受講生とともに火星・木星・土星の観測を実施した実績がある。

本講義は、地球惑星科学を専攻する学生に限らず、幅広い分野の学生の受講を期待する。
観測参加や個別相談を希望する場合は、事前に e-mail にて連絡すること。

During the course period, optional field-based astronomical observation sessions using telescopes and binoculars will be announced.
Except for observations conducted within Kyoto University’s Yoshida Campus, these activities may involve small-group travel. Therefore, students wishing to participate are required to be covered by the student accident and liability insurance recommended by the university.

For observation sessions that involve travel, transportation costs may be borne by the students if the number of participants is large.
In previous years, observations of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were conducted with enrolled students in areas surrounding the university.

This course welcomes students not only from Earth and Planetary Sciences, but also from a wide range of academic backgrounds.
Students who wish to participate in observation activities or seek individual consultation should contact the instructor in advance by e-mail.
