(授業の概要・目的) | Sustainability transitions have been paid greater attention as we recognize that new technology can completely address net-zero carbon emissions, zero plastic leakage, and nature-positive. Rather, they are long-term radical system transformations or co-evolution of technology, infrastructure, institutions, organizations, economy society, and cognition. In the process, niches and innovations emerge while the incumbent declines. The conflicts of interest generate confrontation between them, affecting the direction and speed of transitions. Conducting a case study to understand the process from confrontation to coopetition would help students be equipped with tips to act as transition actors and intermediaries. Against this backdrop, this course aims to acknowledge various aspects of sustainability transition research and master the transition model canvas as an analytical method for a case study. |

(授業の概要・目的) | Scenario planning has paid attention as an indispensable skill set in the Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA) age. Among planning, backcasting is often employed in setting climate targets and deciding transition plans. Targets are required to be science-based and plans need to demonstrate accountability for the (net-zero) targets and reduce the risk of a disorderly transition. Backcasting is employed not only in global scenario analysis like IPCC and IEA but also in local governments, financial institutions, energy-intensive industries, and consultants to make transition plans at the company level. Against this backdrop, this course aims to master a skill set of scenario planning with backcasting for net-zero carbon emissions, coupled with future visioning.

||||||

|||||||

In addition, a U.S. IT giant is advocating web3.0 = internet of value, with blockchain as the core technology, as the next technology after web2.0. Blockchain technology is essential for the realization of the digital economy. Distributed ledgers and crypto assets based on blockchain technology have the potential to revolutionize the conventional economic system. However, there is still a negative view of blockchain technology due to problems associated with crypto asset transactions, such as money laundering and fraud. In this lecture, we will learn the basics of blockchain technology and discuss the potential of the blockchain economy. |

(Outline)In this lecture, we introduce several environmental risks on a global scale, together with the potential risk for survivability for all living creatures on Earth. This is done by making an inter-comparison among each of those risks, scales, and occurrence probability, as well as the social impacts. Especially, we study the potential hazards in association with global warming, general risk analysis, catastrophic mass extinction events (asteroid impacts & massive volcanic eruption), and complex and multiple disasters based on modern civilization. (Objective) Students are expected to learn about Earth’s (terrestrial) ecological systems based on the GAIA concept, and new types of risks which have become critical issues throughout the progress of civilization. Special focus is given to the issues of global warming, nuclear disasters including environmental risks caused by nuclear waste, and other possible environmental disasters and hazards which may affect human civilization. Our final goal is to develop an overall image of a "sustainable civilization”. |
||||||||||||
Students will deepen their understanding of the Earth's ecological system and learn about the ideal mutual linkage between human (Anthropogenic) activity and natural (Natural) response, and well as understand the importance of the balance between them. Students will understand the new types of present-day risks and damage mechanisms associated with civilians, an acquire the knowledge to conduct appropriate risk assessments. Especially, students will evaluate the risk assessment of assumed damage caused by global warming, various extreme damage caused by catastrophic scenarios, and understand the risk of environmental disaster by nuclear power plants and radioactive waste; they will learn the necessary knowledge to help preserve the future of the Earth. |

Our final goal is to develop an overall image of a "sustainable civilization”. |
||||||||||

Assuming a future in which human migration to the Moon and Mars becomes a reality in the latter half of the 21st century, our goal is to integrate the core technologies and social system issues necessary for this migration and to establish them as the “core” disciplines of the space age. The ecological system that exists on the earth and is designed to be transferred to space is entitled as "core biome complex," the technological system necessary to maintain the "life support" system is called "core technology," and the circular society equipped with these technologies is called "core-society," and the realization of "space society" is examined and investigated based on these concepts. In this space habitation study, the goal is to build a society of 1,000 people on the Moon and Mars, and to learn technologies to build a circular society based on "life-support systems" on top of that. In addition, we will propose a circular city, "Core City," by making full use of key technologies such as "artificial gravity facilities" to enable humans to lead healthy lives for a long period of time, and reduce these technologies to the concept of cities on Earth. |
