Japanese language support courses not included in the regular curriculum

Overview

In addition to the Japanese language courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum, the Center offers Introduction to Japanese I, Introduction to Japanese II, Intermediate Japanese Course I, Intermediate Japanese Course II, Advanced Japanese Course, Business Japanese as Japanese language support courses.
Students are not eligible to acquire credits for these Japanese language support courses.
These courses are offered to meet the diverse needs of international students studying at Kyoto University, such as follows.

  • Students who have limited time due to the demands of their study and research, but want to learn enough Japanese to facilitate student life.
  • Students who aim to develop Japanese language abilities applicable in business situations and who are interested in working for Japanese companies or Japanese-affiliated companies.

The Center aims to help students achieve their goals by providing opportunities to study Japanese that are suited to their varying needs.
The Introduction to Japanese I/II and Intermediate Japanese Course I/II are designed for students to be able to study the language efficiently and progress to the Japanese language courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum.
International students (except for Special Auditing Students) and researchers who do not need to obtain credits for Japanese language study are eligible to take these courses. However, note that family members of international students and family members of researchers are not eligible to take these courses.

Courses offered

Select one class to take based on the result of the online placement test. Students are not allowed to take different level classes at the same time. However, it is possible to take the Advanced Japanese Course and Business Japanese at the same time. Furthermore, only advanced level students are allowed to take Business Japanese.

  • Introduction to Japanese I is for the students who need to study the minimum Japanese necessary to help facilitate their daily studies and research.
  • The difficulty goes up as shown below:
    Introduction to Japanese I < Introduction to Japanese II < Intermediate Japanese Course I < Intermediate Japanese Course II < Advanced Japanese Course =Business Japanese.

Intermediate Japanese Course IB ① covers only the second half of the textbook while Intermediate Japanese Course IB ② covers the first half of the textbook. Be sure to check the syllabus for the details of these course.
※For Introduction to Japanese I, two courses are offered, but the content is the same for both courses.

Notices

Registration Information

  1. Please refer to the academic calendar for the schedule of Japanese language support courses not included in the regular curriculum.
  2. Applicants must register for their courses online during the registration period.
  3. After the registration deadline, students are not permitted to attend courses they have not registered.
  4. Applicants are only allowed to register for the courses which are suited to their Japanese language ability.
  5. Students who want to take Introduction to Japanese II course and above level need to take a placement test.
    If you wish to register for Japanese language courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum as well as Japanese language support courses not included in the regular curriculum, you must complete registration STEP1 separately for each of two types of courses through their respective web pages. You should only take the placement test once, however. Following the instructions sent via-email, you must then complete Courses Registration STEP2 separately as you did in STEP1.
  6. The level from which a student will be allowed to choose his/her courses is determined based on the results of the placement test. We will let you know how to check for your placement test results by email. You may not be able to take some of the courses you opted to take, depending on your test results.
  7. If you want to consult about registration (cases where the result of the Placement test differs from the level you chose in Registration (STEP1), the Japanese language coordinators are available for consultation during the online advisory service days. If you wish to take the Online advisory service, make an online reservation in advance following the instructions given in the E-mail announcing the results of the Placement test.
  8. For all courses, including online courses, when a course is oversubscribed, its participants are selected by a lottery.
  9. If you choose Introduction I of Japanese language support courses in Regitration(STEP1), you do not need to complete Course Registration (STEP2).
  10. Your Japanese language course registration will not be finalized until you complete course registration STEP2 except those who choose Introduction to I.
    Please be sure to complete both two step1 & step2.

Information on class cancellations
All information on class cancellations and other class-related issues are informed in class, by email, by PandA, or via the bulletin board at the Yoshida International House. Inquiries by telephone will not receive a reply.
Cancellation of classes and make-up exams
Classes may be cancelled in the case of weather warnings and suspension of transportation services. Information regarding make-up classes in the event of cancellation of classes is informed in class, by email, by PandA, or via the bulletin board at the Yoshida International House.

The schedule for registering courses is as follows.

Sept. 2 (Mon.) 9:00 Registration STEP1 opens
Obtain the login IDs and passwords for each course of “Registration STEP1”. They are on the registration guide which you can get from KULASIS, New Student Registration Website and the Student Affairs Division of your graduate school/faculty. If you wish to register for Japanese language courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum as well as Japanese language support courses not included in the regular curriculum, you must complete registration STEP1 separately for each of two types of courses through their respective web pages.

Online placement Test
The placement test is designed to evaluate your reading, writing and listening skills. Students who want to take Introduction to Japanese II course and above levels need to take the placement test.
If you wish to register for Japanese language courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum as well, you should only take the placement test once. Please write down both 4-digit registration numbers.

Announcement of the placement test score (via Email)
Students are not allowed to take different level courses at the same time. However, it is possible to take the Advanced Japanese Course and Business Japanese at the same. Furthermore, only advanced level students are allowed to take Business Japanese.

If you choose Introduction I in Registration STEP1, you do not need to complete this Course Registration STEP2. ※ The reservation slots are limited so that the reservation is on the first-come-first-served basis. You need the score of the placement test during consultation.
