Japanese language courses for exchange students(special auditors)

Courses

Exchange students (special auditors) are eligible to register for Elementary I, Elementary II, Intermediate I, Intermediate II and Advanced Japanese courses. Please note that Special Research Students are not eligible to take Japanese language courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum.

  • The maximum number of Japanese language classes an exchange student (a special auditor) is eligible to take is 4 (8 credits) since the second semester of academic year 2024. Please be careful not to register for more than 4 classes (8 credits). 8H course and 4H course count as 4 and 2 classes respectively.
  • Select the courses carefully before registering and make sure you attend them regularly until the end of the semester.

Notices

  • Placement tests will be conducted to check your Japanese language ability if you register for Elementary II or higher level courses. However, a student who has taken 4H course B or 8H course in the previous semester and passed it, will be exempted from this semester's placement test and will be allowed to take courses from the next higher level.
    Furthermore, a student who received 65~74 (C) or 60~64 (D) and feels uneasy about advancing to the next level may consult one of the faculty during the advisory service for Japanese language course registration. If you need consultation, please contact the Japanese Education Section.
  • Make sure that the “4H Course A” of each level covers only the first half of the textbook while the “4H Course B” covers the second half of the textbook. Check the syllabus for the details of these courses.

Schedule

The schedule for registering Japanese language courses is as follows.

February 26 (Wed.) Exemption code is sent by e-mail (to only those qualified).
March 3 (Mon.) 9:00 Registration STEP1 Opens
Obtain the login IDs and passwords for each course of ”Registration STEP1“. They are on the registration guide which you can get from KULASIS> Information site or New Student Registration Website or the Student Affairs Division of your graduate school/faculty.
※select the correct student status as specified on your student ID card.

Online Placement Test
The placement test is designed to evaluate your reading, writing and listening skills. Information on how to take the placement test will be sent by email to students who selected Elementary II level or above in Registration STEP1. Please take the test only once during the above period according to the instructions provided.
Students who chose “Kanji class only or Elementary I” or got the exemption code do not need to take the placement test.

Applicants are only allowed to register for the courses which are assigned by the test result.

Online Advisory Session ①
It is open to those who need to discuss and change the course level assessed by the placement test score. If you wish to take the online advisory service, make an online reservation in advance following the instructions given in the E-mail.
※The reservation slots are limited so that the reservation is on the first-come-first-served basis.
April 1 (Tue.) 9:00 Course Registration STEP2 Opens
Information regarding the STEP2 will be sent by email to students who have completed Registration STEP1 and the Placement Test(in case they wish to take Elementary II level or above). Select the course according to the instructions provided.
April 3 (Thu.) 17:00 Course Registration STEP2 Closes
Your Japanese language course registration will not be finalized until you complete Course Registration STEP2. Please be sure to complete this step by the deadline.
※A lottery will be conducted for the class that is over-subscription.
