Japanese language course for regular (degree-seeking) Students
Courses
The courses you are eligible to take depend on whether you are an undergraduate or a graduate student.

①Undergraduate students

Undergraduate students other than the International Course Program of Civil Engineering
Are eligible to take Intermediate I, Intermediate II and Advanced courses, but not eligible to take Elementary I and Elementary II.
Kyoto iUP students should check the levels they are eligible to take with kyoto iUP office. -
Students in the Undergraduate International Course Program of Civil Engineering
Are eligible to take Elementary I (4H course), Elementary II (4H course), Intermediate I (4H course), Intermediate II (4H course) and Advanced courses.

Undergraduate students other than the International Course Program of Civil Engineering
- However, whether the credits for the Japanese language courses in each level are certified as credits required for graduation depends on your year of entrance and/or your faculty/department. Please check with your faculty's student affairs office.

②Graduate students
Are eligible to take all the courses (Elementary I, Elementary II, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, Advanced courses and Integrated course).
※ The maximum number of Japanese language classes a graduate student is eligible to take is 4 (8 credits) since the second semester of academic year 2024. Please be careful not to register for more than 4 classes (8 credits). 8H course and 4H course count as 4 and 2 classes respectively.
Registration procedures
Please be sure to complete Registration (STEP1) through the “Japanese language course registration webpage” below. You cannot register through KULASIS. When you select your Japanese language courses, please make sure that their class periods do not conflict with any other classes' periods you are taking.

Notices
- Placement tests will be conducted to check your Japanese language ability if you register for Elementary II or higher level courses. However, a student who has taken 4H course B or 8H course in the previous semester and passed it, will be exempted from this semester's placement test and will be allowed to take courses from the next higher level.
Furthermore, a student who received 65~74 (C) or 60~64 (D) and feels uneasy about advancing to the next level may consult one of the faculty during the advisory service for Japanese language course registration. If you need consultation, please contact the Japanese Education Section. - Make sure that the “4H Course A” of each level covers only the first half of the textbook while the “4H Course B” covers the second half of the textbook. Check the syllabus for the details of these courses.
- Also note that “Intermediate Japanese IB① (Integrated Course)” covers only the secocnd half of the textbook while “Intermidiate Japanese IB② (Integrated Course)” covers the first half of the textbook. Be sure to check the syllabus for the details of these courses.
- There is a Class withdrawal (Applies only to regular (degree-seeking) students of Kyoto University) through KULASIS.

The schedule for registering Japanese language courses is as follows.

Sept. 2 (Mon.) 9:00 | Registration STEP1 opens Obtain the login IDs and passwords for each course of “Registration STEP1”. They are on the registration guide which you can get from KULASIS, New Student Registration Website and the Student Affairs Division of your graduate school/faculty. If you wish to register for Japanese language courses in the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum as well as Japanese language support courses not included in the regular curriculum, you must complete registration STEP1 separately for each of two types of courses through their respective web pages. ※select the correct student status as specified on your student ID card. |

Online placement test The placement test is designed to evaluate your reading, writing and listening skills. Information on how to take the placement test will be sent via email to students who selected Elementary II level or above in Registration STEP1. Please take the test only once during the above period according to the instructions provided. Students who chose “Kanji class only・Elementary I” in STEP1 or got the exemption code do not need to take the placement test. |
